Class Size Teacher- Math/ELA Teacher 7th Grade

About the role

Chicago Public Schools (CPS) is the third-largest school district in the United States, serving over 340,000 students in 600+ schools and employing nearly 36,000 people, most of them teachers. The Joint Class Size Assessment Council (JCSAC) allocates Class-Size Teacher positions to address oversized classrooms in Priority Schools and other impacted schools. These positions are reviewed annually and concluded at the end of each school year. Under the supervision of the school principal, the Class Size Teacher is responsible for the instruction, progress, and discipline of all pupils in assigned classes and performs related duties as required.

Responsibilities

• Instructional planning, including providing written lesson plans following the objectives of the instructional programs.
• Establishing positive learning environment expectation standards for all pupils.
• Evaluating pupils’ progress and maintaining current and accurate records of pupils’ achievements.
• Implementing instructional methods, applying contemporary principles of learning theory and teaching methodology.
• Drawing from the range of instructional materials available in the school.
• Participating in the development and implementation of new teaching techniques.
• Providing bulletin board and interest areas reflective of pupils’ current work.
• Exhibiting and applying knowledge of the curriculum content related to subject areas and instructional level.
• Participating in programs to improve student attendance.
• Promoting anti-vandalism programs in the schools.
• Establishing and maintaining reasonable rules of conduct within the classroom and on school grounds, including playgrounds, corridors, and lunchrooms, consistent with the provisions of the Chicago Public Schools’ Uniform Discipline Code.
• Maintaining accurate attendance records and seating charts.
• Encouraging student growth in self-discipline and positive self-concept.
• Ensuring fairness in teacher-pupil relationships and exhibiting an understanding and respect for students.
• Initiating appropriate conferences with parents, guardians, administrators, and/or ancillary personnel following school procedures.
• Communicating with parents or guardians and counseling pupils on academic progress, attendance, and conduct.
• Participating in in-service meetings and professional staff meetings and using pertinent information and materials provided.
• Coordinating and attending class field trips (optional).
• Working in extra-curricular and after-school activities (optional).
• Utilizing appropriate resources available in the community.

Requirements

• Education: Successful completion of all student teaching requirements and course work required to obtain the appropriate teaching certificate(s) issued by the Illinois State Board of Education.
• License: Teachers must possess at least one of the following valid teaching licenses issued by the Illinois State Board of Education: a Professional Educator License (PEL) or an Educator License with Stipulations (ELS).

Qualifications

• Knowledge: Subject matter consistent with state certification requirements, contemporary principles and practice of teaching, and classroom and behavior management techniques.
• Abilities: Modify instruction to meet student needs, cooperate with school faculty and administration in developing and implementing an articulated program of instruction, work effectively with pupils, parents, guardians, staff, and community representatives, and understand the physical, intellectual, social, and emotional patterns of pupils.
• Skills: Application of contemporary principles and practices of teaching, good oral and written communication, good interpersonal skills, and exercising sound and professional judgment.
• Physical Requirements: Light work: Exerting up to twenty (20) pounds of force occasionally, up to ten (10) pounds of force frequently, or a negligible amount of force often to move objects.

Conditions of Employment

• Establish and maintain Chicago residency within six months of hire date and throughout employment with the district.
• Completion of the Class Size Teacher - Interim Assignment Acceptance Form is required for this position.
• Be fully vaccinated within 30 days of hire date or submit to weekly COVID-19 testing.

Pay

Salary range: $64,469.94 to $82,839.39.

Primary Location: South Side - 9239 South Jeffery Avenue (Joseph Warren School).
