About the role

The Civil Transportation Engineer role focuses on leading and performing roadway design for state and local transportation projects across Michigan. The position involves comprehensive road, drainage, traffic, and signing design using MicroStation Bentley for 3D modeling, as well as construction phase support and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and perform roadway design for transportation projects with state and local agencies throughout Michigan.
  • Develop detailed road design plans, including horizontal and vertical alignments, typical sections, and geometric layouts.
  • Design drainage systems associated with roadway projects, including stormwater management and related civil infrastructure components.
  • Perform traffic-related design tasks such as traffic control plans, pavement markings, and signal-related layout in coordination with project requirements.
  • Prepare signing design, including regulatory, warning, and guide sign layouts that comply with applicable standards and guidelines.
  • Use MicroStation Bentley for 3D modeling to produce accurate, coordinated design models and drawings.
  • Prepare construction cost estimates and quantities to support project budgeting, bidding, and client decision-making.
  • Mentor and lead junior staff by providing technical guidance, reviewing work, and supporting professional development.
  • Participate in client meetings to present design concepts, discuss project progress, and address technical questions.
  • Support construction phase activities, including bid evaluations and review of contractor shop drawing submittals.
  • Collaborate with architects, engineers from multiple disciplines, surveyors, and construction inspectors to deliver integrated project solutions.
  • Collaborate with transportation department leadership and project managers to meet schedule, quality, and project objectives.
  • Apply civil engineering principles and transportation design standards to ensure safety, functionality, and regulatory compliance.
  • Contribute to innovative and sustainable design solutions aligned with firm-wide best practices and industry recognition.
  • Utilize traffic engineering and, where applicable, bridge-related design knowledge to support multidisciplinary transportation projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.
  • Minimum of 4 years of roadway design experience.
  • Proficiency in roadway design, including geometric design and associated civil infrastructure.
  • Experience using MicroStation for design and drafting on transportation projects.
  • Experience with Civil 3D design software (either MicroStation or Civil 3D is required).
  • Strong foundation in civil engineering principles and practices.
  • Ability to perform traffic-related design tasks within roadway projects.
  • Capability to prepare construction estimates and quantities.
  • Effective communication skills for participation in client meetings and coordination with internal teams.
  • Ability to mentor and provide guidance to junior engineering staff.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate design documents and models.

Essential Skills

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Experience working on MDOT (Michigan Department of Transportation) projects.
  • Bentley 3D modeling skills for advanced design and visualization.
  • Project management and leadership experience on transportation projects.
  • Experience in traffic engineering and familiarity with traffic design standards.
  • Exposure to bridge design within transportation projects.
  • Experience collaborating within multidisciplinary teams that include architects, landscape architects, mechanical, electrical, structural, and civil engineers.
  • Familiarity with public sector and government agency project processes and requirements.
  • Interest in contributing to sustainable, innovative, and award-winning design solutions.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • 7 or more years of roadway design experience.
  • Experience in traffic engineering and familiarity with traffic design standards.
  • Exposure to bridge design within transportation projects.
  • Experience collaborating within multidisciplinary teams that include architects, landscape architects, mechanical, electrical, structural, and civil engineers.
  • Familiarity with public sector and government agency project processes and requirements.
  • Interest in contributing to sustainable, innovative, and award-winning design solutions.

Work Environment

The role offers flexibility to work from offices located in Waterford or Lansing, with the option for remote work after an initial training period and as project needs allow. Core hours are typically 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with some flexibility as required by project schedules. The position is part of a large, well-established consulting environment with a dedicated Transportation Department and access to multidisciplinary expertise across numerous offices. Engineers work with modern design technologies, including MicroStation Bentley and Civil 3D, and collaborate with teams focused on architecture, engineering, construction management, surveying, right-of-way acquisition, and materials testing. Pay And Benefits

The pay range for this position is $80000.00 - $100000.00/yr.
