Civil Site Engineer (Forensic Engineering)

Responsibilities

  • Conduct field investigations and analyze failures involving all types of civil-site built environments and infrastructure for large scale land developments, master planned communities, mixed-use projects, commercial and industrial projects, roadway and utility, and streetscape enhancements.
  • Evaluate design/construction-related deficiencies associated with grading and drainage, stormwater management and conveyance, underground utility systems and installation, erosion control, concrete flatwork, asphalt pavements, and hardscape systems.
  • Investigate matters involving:
    • Design of site-visibility at intersections, vehicular use areas, parking lots, pedestrian and vehicular ingress/egress ways.
    • Applicability of MUTCD and ADA standards.
    • Preparation, permitting, and construction implementation of civil/site construction plans related to DOT, water management districts, and various municipalities.
    • Municipal zoning and variance hearings.
    • Code, regulations, and standards interpretation and application.
    • Stormwater management quantity and quality design, above and below ground.
    • Floodplain delineation.
    • Stormwater collection and conveyance systems.
    • Sediment and erosion control design and inspections.
    • Hydrology and hydraulics design.
    • Site grading design.
    • Development processes during design and construction.
    • Close out procedures of land development projects.
    • Failure modes of infrastructure systems.
  • Conduct unbiased investigations for various types of clients.
  • Responsible for retention and development of client relations.
  • Prepare oral and written reports in layman's terms that document causes of failure, extent of loss, and recommended remediation.
  • Deliver professional presentations, develop client relationships, and promote self to client groups.
  • Support conclusions by appropriate expert testimony in legal proceedings.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
  • Accept and integrate constructive feedback into job performance.
  • Regular and predictable presence at work.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of civil/site development experience.
  • P. E. (Professional Engineer) registration required through testing.
  • Must possess strong writing skills.
  • Public speaking experience a plus.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.

Skills

Proficiency with the following is a plus:

  • Design of site-visibility at intersections, vehicular use areas, parking lots, pedestrian and vehicular ingress/egress ways.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to travel on a variable schedule, including 50% of the time locally and 20% of the time overnight.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Ability to climb ladders and inspect roofs.
  • Ability to carry equipment to and from job sites.
  • Ability to work at various heights on structures.
  • Ability to maneuver in and around buildings and in confined spaces.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with clients and colleagues.
  • Ability to drive in all conditions.
  • Ability to fly on airplanes.
  • Ability to visually inspect job sites and relevant artifacts.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment as required by the work site.
  • Ability to learn a new industry and obtain required certifications.
  • Ability to handle occasional long workdays and non-traditional hours.
