About the role

This opportunity with Black & Veatch offers the chance to collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams within the Technology, Commercial & Industrial Market Sector, supporting Grid Solutions projects such as Substation and Overhead Transmission Line, while building critical civil infrastructure for today’s and tomorrow’s challenges. Civil Engineering Technicians contribute to the planning, design, and implementation of site development, including grading and drainage, erosion control, roadways, fencing, and underground utilities for these advanced industrial and commercial facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Functions as a senior engineering technician, technical design specialist, and/or supervisor

  • Applies advanced technical expertise to solve complex design challenges within a specific engineering discipline

  • Contributes to the development of innovative engineering solutions

  • Uses digital tools and design software (e.g., CAD, BIM, 3D modeling) with standardized procedures to create, modify, and maintain technical documentation, drawings, and project deliverables

  • Provides consultation, training, and oversight to other engineering technicians to ensure quality, consistency, and compliance with project standards

  • Establishes and communicates appropriate design and graphic standards

  • Reviews project requirements to determine correct formats and deliverable content

  • Promotes quality and consistency across projects, groups, and sections

  • Reviews design inputs to ensure alignment and consistency

  • Ensures deliverables comply with applicable codes and standards

  • May contribute to continuous improvement of design guides, standards, and processes

  • May participate and lead process improvement and change management activities

  • Manages drawing control and maintains historical project records

  • Applies engineering principles and established design practices to complex designs

  • Exercises sound judgment in interpreting inputs and making deliverable-related decisions

  • Handles complex technical assignments and provides guidance to other professionals

  • Performs design calculations, material quantity takeoffs, estimates, and documentation

  • May review deliverables produced by others for quality and accuracy

  • May coordinate presentations, production design, and use of electronic design tools

  • May monitor production to ensure consistency, budget, and schedule

  • May program control systems or support plant start-up activities within area of expertise

  • Collaborates with other design groups to exchange information for design development

  • Makes presentations and conducts training classes within a specialized area of expertise

Qualifications

  • Associate Degree in Drafting or an Engineering Design Related Technology required.

  • Bachelor Degree in an Engineering Design Related Technology preferred.

  • Typically a minimum of 11 years related work experience.

Skills

  • Advanced technical expertise in civil engineering principles and practices

  • Proficiency in industry-standard design tools such as Autodesk AutoCAD, Civil 3D and Bentley MicroStation

  • Ability to create, modify, and maintain technical documentation, drawings, and project deliverables

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills

  • Experience in leading and supervising engineering technicians and support personnel

  • Knowledge of relevant codes and standards
