Civil Field Engineer
Shimmick is seeking a talented Field Engineer to be based in the greater Los Angeles area. Initially, you will support the North Hollywood to Pasadena Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Project, a 19-mile transit corridor connecting North Hollywood, Burbank, Glendale, Eagle Rock, and Pasadena. This project features 22 new stations and is designed to provide faster, more reliable transit options using zero-emission electric buses.
Shimmick’s Southwest Division, headquartered in Irvine, California, focuses on large public projects in Southern California across water resources, water treatment, transportation, and transit markets. The division has secured major projects, including the $828 million Gerald Desmond Bridge, the first cable-stayed vehicular bridge in California.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria to meet basic engineering and construction specifications.
- Exercise sound professional judgment on details of work.
- Perform walk-downs and inspections of installed commodities to ensure conformance with specifications and design.
- Conduct quantity surveys for tracking and reporting.
- Provide technical direction to drafters, technicians, and surveyors.
- Support daily field operations on heavy civil construction sites, including excavation, structural concrete, grading, and utility installation.
- Interpret construction drawings, specifications, and work plans for field crews.
- Perform quantity take-offs and assist in tracking material usage and equipment needs on site.
- Monitor work for compliance with safety standards, quality expectations, and project specifications.
- Coordinate with survey teams for layout, elevations, and as-built data collection.
- Prepare daily field reports, photo documentation, and work logs to support project tracking and billing.
- Assist with resolving field issues by collaborating with superintendents, subcontractors, and design engineers.
- Participate in job site safety meetings, audits, and ensure PPE and safety protocols are followed.
- Support preparation and tracking of RFIs, submittals, and minor change requests from the field.
- Use construction software and tools to report progress and support communication between field and office teams.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field plus 2+ years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
- Heavy civil transportation infrastructure project experience (roadway, street improvement, earthworks, bridge structures, etc.).
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous heavy civil construction experience in a self-perform environment.
This position is based in Glendale, CA. Qualified applicants who are offered a position must pass a pre-employment substance abuse test. This position does not include sponsorship for United States work authorization.
Pay
$95,000–$115,000 per year, depending on experience and/or education.
