About the role

WSP USA hosts hundreds of internships across the United States to provide hands-on, meaningful work experience that enhances education and professional aptitude. As a Full-Time Civil Engineering Intern in our Troy, NY office, you will work alongside senior staff on real projects, gaining exposure through our Developing Professionals Network with mentorship, networking opportunities, and lifelong career connections.

This temporary position is part of the WSP Summer Internship Program, scheduled to start on May 17th, 2027, with flexibility in the individual start date. The internship offers the opportunity to work with public and/or private clients within the Northeast Region of the Transportation & Infrastructure sector.

Responsibilities

  • Support a variety of engineering tasks to develop technical, social, and ethical skills.
  • Learn and apply basic principles of Civil Highway Engineering to project design and analysis, referencing relevant civil construction laws, codes, regulations, and compliance practices (e.g., NYSDOT HDM, AASHTO, MUTCD).
  • Assist with engineering design, project research, preliminary design calculations, and field work.
  • Support preparation of final design plans, special provisions, and cost estimates.
  • Assist in collecting and maintaining project documentation.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Requirements

  • Actively enrolled in an accredited Civil Engineering degree (or related) Undergraduate program with an anticipated graduation date of December 2027 or later.
  • Must be 18 or older.
  • Demonstrated interest in highway/transportation engineering or a related field, with a strong desire to advance skills related to WSP’s work and projects.
  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively to both engineering and non-engineering audiences.
  • Capable of taking direction from leadership, mentors, and managers to execute projects.
  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.
  • Authorization to work in the United States at the start of the internship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Actively enrolled in an accredited Civil Engineering (or related) Masters or PhD program with an anticipated graduation date of December 2027 or later.
  • Experience using OpenRoads, MicroStation, Microsoft Office, or AutoCAD.
  • Prior internship experience and leadership involvement on campus.

Pay

Expected salary range: $23.03 - $26.50 per hour. The compensation range reflects what WSP USA in good faith believes it might pay for this position based on education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and internal equity, as well as specific geographic location.

This is a 12-week summer internship program starting on May 17th, 2027, with flexibility in the individual start date.
