About the role
Location: Iowa City, IA
A Civil Engineer Intern with Houston Engineering Inc. (HEI) will spend time in the field working on outdoor construction phase activities as well as a variety of in‑office projects assisting engineers.
Responsibilities
- Assist with plan specifications and estimates as well as documenting construction activities.
- Assist with AutoCAD Civil 3D drawings and update redlines with various project set drawings.
- Operate electronic survey instruments such as GPS and Total Station.
- Perform work in a variety of software such as AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation, ArcGIS, etc.
- Observe and collect data at different types of project sites.
- Assist with research, development, and design of projects.
- Personalized internship may include learning roadway design, geometric layout, drainage analysis, and erosion control.
Qualifications
- Enrolled in a Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering, Bioproducts and Biosystem Engineering, or related engineering program.
- Completed coursework in general surveying and AutoCAD (preferred).
- Ability to work extended periods in outdoor conditions.
- Above‑average math and communication skills.
- Valid driver’s license and availability for overnight travel.
