Civil Engineer I (Development Review)
About the role
The Civil Engineer I performs entry-level professional engineering work supporting the planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of municipal infrastructure projects, including transportation systems, water and wastewater utilities, stormwater management, and floodplain programs.
Responsibilities
- Reviews and coordinates review of project plans/designs for compliance with engineering principles, federal, state, county and, city regulations; prepares recommendations for approval or denial.
- Collaborates with other departments or agencies to facilitate conflict resolution, project implementation and compliance to standards.
- Serves as a technical information resource for the public, consultants and developers, City boards and departments, and City Council regarding specific projects or general engineering questions; may prepare presentations and written materials.
- Participates in staff, project review, and policy meetings.
- May develop and operate complex computer simulation models.
- May administer or monitor project budget.

Qualifications
- College degree or equivalent work experience.
- Some positions may require functionally related certification or advanced degrees.
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university.
Skills
- Understanding of engineering practices and principles.
- Ability to use engineering, computer-aided design, spreadsheet, word processing and statistical software.
- Affinity for math and physics in order to solve engineering problems.
- Ability to perform basic statistical analysis.
- Strong communication including verbal, written, and technical writing skills.
- Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts.
- Ability to demonstrate critical thinking, and analytical thought process.
