Essential Job Functions
- Performs highway/structure engineering design functions without supervision and guidance, including engineering computations, specifications, cost estimates, checking, reviewing, report writing, etc.
- Directly assists Project Engineers and Work Group Leaders on all projects.
- Conducts and/or assists in visits to project sites, project status meetings, and public meetings.
- Mentors less experienced coworkers in developing the skills and knowledge.
- Affords assistance in proposal preparation, letter of interest, supplement preparation, etc.
- Reviews design and/or shop drawings.
- Implements project work plan.
- Keeps up to date with new design technology, construction equipment, and bridge design/construction advancements.
- Attends field views and meetings as required to provide technical input.
- Provides design support for workshare with other offices.
- May act as Work Group Leader on minor projects or portions of larger projects.
- May perform bridge inspection (structures group) as abilities permit.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of PennDOT and other clients' design manuals, procedures, specifications, standards, computer programs, applicable design codes, engineering software, and plan presentation format.
- Knowledge of Design Procedures.
- Knowledge of technical report writing.
- Ability to use computer software and other online resources.
- Knowledge of Bentley MicroStation design software.
- Ability to perform complex design tasks independently.
- Assists in the preparation of specifications.
- Ability to perform Cross-Discipline Reviews.
- Ability to supervise other members of the design team.
- Ability to communicate with coworkers, clients, and the public in a courteous and professional manner.
- Ability to travel with infrequent overnight stays.
- Ability to check or review design and drawings of structural elements.
- Knowledge of construction techniques for highways/structures.
- Skilled in using word processing, spreadsheet applications, Bluebeam, and "MATHCAD."
- Highway Specific Ability to assemble Design Criteria, L/G/T, DFV design submissions.
- Structure Specific Ability to assemble Pro-Team, TS&L, and Foundation Submissions.
- Bridge Inspection Ability/experience to perform all Team Leader functions.
Education and Experience Required
- BS degree in civil engineering.
- PE license and minimum four (4) years of progressively responsible design experience.
- OR Minimum ten (10) years of progressively responsible design experience with no PE license.
- Attains training prerequisites.
