Citywide Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist
Job Summary
The Citywide Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) teaches students who are blind or have severe visual impairments safe, efficient, independent travel skills. This includes using the long white cane, sighted guides, protective techniques, and various forms of public transportation. The COMS also assists students with low vision in using devices like monocular telescopes and creates tactile maps. Key responsibilities include evaluating students for O&M services, developing IEP goals, providing direct instruction, consulting with teachers, and participating in professional development.
Educational Requirements
To be successful, the COMS must possess:
- Certification by the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP)
- Dually certified COMS (COMS certification and ISBE TVI licensure), preferred
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Strong spoken and written communication skills
- Knowledge of the Chicago street grid
- The physical ability to efficiently walk and/or take public transportation throughout the city
- Ability to maintain focus and react quickly to potential hazards
- Knowledge of the UEB braille code
