About the role

The City of Fort Myers seeks a highly responsible administrative and professional individual to manage all activities of the Utilities Engineering function. This position involves managing and providing direction to the Utilities Department in providing professional engineering services to the staff and citizens of Fort Myers.

Responsibilities

  • Manages and supervises the Utilities Engineering staff.
  • Provides professional engineering support to City staff in the areas of the operation and maintenance of infrastructure.
  • Represents the City in engineering matters to County, State, and Federal Agencies.
  • Researches field conditions, budgetary resources, and develops capital improvement projects for City water, sewer, and other facilities.
  • Manages project management for capital improvement projects.
  • Oversight of the implementation of construction contracts to ensure code compliance, quality of work and materials, and operation of facilities upon completion.
  • Provides advice and counsel with respect to engineering matters, including approval/disapproval of annexations, variances, conditional uses, and vacations for consideration.
  • Meets with City’s consultants on water, sewer, and special projects to convey related City requirements and code requirements.
  • Prepares, submits, and implements permit applications to Federal and State authorities for operation of water and sewer plants, water withdrawals, water use, reuse water, streets, etc.
  • Prepares and manages budget for Utilities Engineering and assists in the planning and implementation of the Capital Improvements Budget for Utilities projects.
  • Attends Council meetings, as required.

Requirements

  • Minimum Requirements: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in civil engineering or related field. Ten years’ of progressively responsible experience in public works, planning, design and contract administration or related work; two years of which must have been in the administrative and supervisory capacity.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Master's Degree preferred from an accredited college or university. Five years’ experience specifically in local government or similar environment.

  • Stress tolerance, flexibility, sound judgment, high ethical standards, personal integrity, and sensitivity to political concerns.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Quick decision-making, good managerial skills, analytical skills, organizational and problem-solving skills.

Qualifications

  • Current status as a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Florida or the ability to obtain a Professional Engineer License in the state of Florida within one year.
  • Valid Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
