City Prosecutor

About the role

The City of Auburn is seeking a Prosecuting Attorney to perform professional legal work with primary responsibility for prosecution of misdemeanor and gross misdemeanor crimes and infractions.

The Legal Department represents the City in its day-to-day operations and provides legal advice to the Mayor, City Council, and Boards & Commissions. The team consists of three divisions: Civil, Prosecution, and the City Clerk's office.

The City of Auburn, incorporated in 1891, spans over 29.8 square miles and is home to over 80,000 residents. The City operates under a Strong-Mayor form of Mayor-Council government.

Responsibilities

• Appear at prosecution court proceedings including arraignments, pre-trial hearings, motions, jury/bench trials, sentencings, review hearings, and contested infraction hearings.
• Review cases for criminal charging, and prepare charged cases for in-court prosecution by preparing necessary documents and contacting needed witnesses/victims and opposing counsel.
• Communicate clearly and concisely speaking and writing to a variety of audiences in a professional manner; work courteously, cooperatively, effectively, and professionally with City Staff, the Police Department, the Courts and court staff, opposing attorneys, and the public.
• Organize case information and maintain uniform case files; ensure proper discovery; interview witnesses; analyze evidence and the law; develop trial or motion strategies; perform legal research; prepare briefs; effectively and confidently present the City’s case and oral arguments in court; and perform appellate work as needed.
• Manage criminal prosecution caseload, coordinating with the Police Department and Courts for effective and efficient case management.

Requirements

• Graduation from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association.
• Valid state driver’s license without impending loss at time of appointment.
• Applicants must successfully complete fingerprinting, background check, and the CJIS (Criminal Justice Information Services) Security Certification Test to be allowed to view sensitive information and have unescorted access while at the Police Department (per Washington State Patrol ACCESS unit).

Qualifications

Preferred experience includes:

• Litigating criminal misdemeanor cases and traffic violation cases, or equivalent experience.
• Criminal prosecution experience, Rule 9 prosecution experience, and/or criminal prosecution internship or externship experience.
