About the role

NSA's Linguists, known as Multidisciplined Language Analysts (MDLAs), play a crucial role in the Intelligence Community by analyzing, transcribing, and translating foreign language materials. They contribute to the SIGINT mission, helping U.S. policymakers and military leaders gain insights into foreign language worlds, cultures, and geopolitical contexts.

Responsibilities

  • Offer U.S. policymakers and military leaders a window into the foreign language world by analyzing, transcribing, and translating key information.
  • Research and understand other cultures, their operations, and their place in the broader geo-political landscape.
  • Apply new techniques and develop creative solutions to address complex analytic problems, such as synthesizing large volumes of data and disparate sources of information.
  • Craft written and oral assessments that provide unique insights unavailable from other intelligence disciplines.
  • Work independently and collaboratively with other analysts both within NSA and across the Intelligence Community to research, analyze, and report.

Requirements

  • Minimum language proficiency of Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) level 2/2 in reading and listening in the target language for which the applicant is being considered.
  • Relevant experience in one or more of the following: performing professional work in the language (translation, transcription), military, teaching, and analysis; or non-language work in fields such as intelligence analysis, international relations, security studies, intelligence studies, journalism, law, STEM fields, and other topics relevant to NSA mission.
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED and a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience, or an Associate's degree with 2 years of relevant experience, or a Bachelor's degree with no experience, or a Master's degree with 1 year of relevant experience, or a Doctoral degree and no experience for Entry/Developmental level.
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED and a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience, or an Associate's degree with 5 years of relevant experience, or a Bachelor's degree with 3 years of relevant experience, or a Master's degree with 1 year of relevant experience, or a Doctoral degree and no experience for Full Performance level.
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED and a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience, or an Associate's degree with 8 years of relevant experience, or a Bachelor's degree with 6 years of relevant experience, or a Master's degree with 4 years of relevant experience, or a Doctoral degree with 2 years of relevant experience for Senior level.

Qualifications

  • A degree in any field is acceptable.
  • Relevant experience must be in one or more of the following: performing professional work in the language (for example, translation, transcription), military, teaching, and analysis; OR non-language work in a field such as intelligence analysis, international relations, security studies, intelligence studies, journalism, law, STEM fields (for example, computer science, chemistry, space or weapons systems, or cyber), and other topics relevant to NSA mission.
  • Applicant must have a minimum language proficiency of Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) level 2/2 in reading and listening in the target language for which the applicant is being considered, ENTRY/DEVELOPMENTAL Entry is with a high school diploma or GED plus 4 years of relevant experience, or an Associate's degree plus 2 years of relevant experience, or a Bachelor's degree with no experience. FULL PERFORMANCE Entry is with a high school diploma or GED plus 7 years of relevant experience, or an Associate's degree plus 5 years of relevant experience, or a Bachelor's degree plus 3 years of relevant experience, or a Master's degree plus 1 year of relevant experience, or a Doctoral degree and no experience. SENIOR Entry is with a high school diploma or GED plus 10 years of relevant experience, or an Associate's degree plus 8 years of relevant experience, or a Bachelor's degree plus 6 years of relevant experience, or a Master's degree plus 4 years of relevant experience, or a Doctoral degree plus 2 years of relevant experience.

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

  • Payscale offers are based on candidates' education level and years of experience relevant to the position and also take into account information provided by the hiring manager/organization regarding the work level for the position. Salary Range: $50,460 - $187,093 (Entry/Developmental, Full Performance, Senior).
  • Training will be provided based on the selectee's needs and experience.
  • Salary range varies by location, work level, and relevant experience to the position.
  • The work schedule is Monday - Friday, with a basic 8-hour/day work requirement between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. (flexible).
