Job Summary
Under the supervision of an RN, performs specific duties/procedures in relation to the care and treatment of patients at the University Hospitals and Clinics.
Education & Experience
- High school graduate and any combination of related education and related experience equal to two (2) years
- Currently employed as a UMMC Student Nurse Extern
- Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician preferred
- Six (6) months experience as a Nursing Assistant/Orderly or healthcare related position preferred
Responsibilities
- Records vital signs accurately and reports any changes to the RN
- Performs venipuncture when ordered
- Performs computerized EKGs according to policy and procedure and provides copies for the patient's chart and the heart station
- Informs RN of any unusual occurrences or changes in patient's condition
- Provides comfort measures to patient and family members as needed
- Orders, labels, delivers, and maintains records of lab specimens
- Keeps assigned work area clean and stocked
- Contributes to the efficient operation of the unit
Physical and Environmental Demands
- Occasional exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold
- Occasional handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment
- Frequent exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals
- Constant work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality
- Occasional bending, occasional lifting and carrying more than 100 pounds, occasional climbing, occasional crawling, occasional crouching/stooping, occasional kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, occasional reaching, occasional sitting, constant standing, frequent twisting, and constant walking
