Child & Youth Behavioral Counselor

This position provides the full breadth of Child and Youth Behavioral (CYB) counseling services to children of all ages of military service members and their families at military installations, including civilian expeditionary workforce and their families when activated.

Responsibilities

  • Provide non-medical, short-term, solution-focused counseling directly to eligible children and youth of service members at assigned primary and secondary locations, including assessment, brief counseling and consultation, action planning, referral to resources, and follow-up.
  • Support staff and personnel of Child Development Centers (CDC), youth programs, and summer camps, as well as provide parent support, training, and guidance.
  • Deliver training and health and wellness presentations, participate in health fairs, and engage in other base/installation activities focused on children and youth.
  • Enter counselor activity data daily through a smartphone or web application to ensure accurate reporting while maintaining confidentiality and anonymity.
  • Establish and maintain working relationships with community resources focused on children and youth, providing appropriate linkages.
  • Maintain visibility within assigned locations to ensure accessibility of MFLC services, adhering to line-of-sight protocol when working with children.
  • Partner with Points of Contact (POC) to address the needs of the installation/facility and develop effective professional relationships.
  • Manage duty to warn and restricted reporting situations according to Department of Defense (DoD) protocol, staffing cases with Regional Supervisor/Regional Director.
  • Communicate with Regional Supervisors and participate in regular individual and group supervision, sharing trends and issues from assigned installations.
  • Respond to critical incidents and special requests as directed by the POC and approved by the Office of Secretary of Defense (OSD) program manager, flexing schedule as needed.
  • Participate in in-services, training, Quality Improvement committees, initiatives, studies, pilot programs, and other contract activities as assigned.
  • Comply with site-specific requirements for military installations, including immunizations or vaccinations if required.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree from an accredited Graduate Program in a Mental Health-related field.
  • Valid unrestricted independent counseling license from a State, District of Columbia, US Territory, or Commonwealth.
  • Less than 2 years of post-licensure clinical experience.
  • Intermediate-level competencies in technology and software (e.g., Microsoft Suite, internet navigation, smartphone/tablet and application navigation, video-conferencing platforms).
  • Ability to engage and communicate with military members or children, respond quickly to emergent situations, and traverse short/long distances on base, including rugged or uneven terrain.
  • US Citizenship and fluency in English.
  • Understanding, sensitivity, and empathy for children, service members, and their families.
  • Ability to develop trusting, helping relationships and work effectively with individuals and families from diverse backgrounds.
  • Pass a Child National Agency Check and Inquiries (CNACI) Clearance, Installation Records Check (IRC), Criminal History Background Check, and FBI Fingerprints Check.
  • Valid U.S. state vehicle operator’s license; may be required to obtain a U.S. military vehicle operator’s permit for commercial sedans at TDY locations.
  • Meet Magellan MFLC CYB criteria for experience with children and youth, with a specialty in child and adolescent development/psychology.
  • For school-assigned counselors: past work experience in a school setting.

Pay

Salary Minimum: $59,922
Salary Maximum: $100,280

This position may be eligible for short-term incentives as well as a comprehensive benefits package.
