Child Protective Services (Social Service Specialist 1)

About the role

The Oregon Department of Human Services is seeking a Child Protective Services (Social Service Specialist 1) to join our dedicated team. This position involves responding to referrals regarding alleged child abuse or neglect, conducting assessments, and developing protective actions.

Responsibilities

• Respond to assigned referrals regarding alleged child abuse or neglect when a field assessment is necessary.
• Determine whether abuse or neglect has occurred, identify child safety threats, and develop protective actions and ongoing safety plans when children would be unsafe without intervention.
• Conduct child interviews, parent interviews, gather collateral interviews, observe the home environment, make determinations, arrange medical evaluations, substitute care placements, attend court hearings, and document activities.
• Complete various documentation tasks, including entering information in the FACIS system, completing referral information, and preparing court-related documents.

Requirements

• A valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record are required.
• Experience alone will not meet the minimum qualifications for this position.
• A bachelor’s degree in Human Services or a related field, or a combination of a bachelor’s degree unrelated to Human Services and one year of relevant experience, or an associate degree and two years of relevant experience, or completion of coursework equivalent to certification consistent with Oregon Caseworker Competency.

• Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
• Ability to use computer systems and software to manage work accurately and efficiently.
• Ability to adapt communication and service approaches to meet the varied needs of individuals, families, and communities.
• Quick decision-making skills to ensure safety of self and others in stressful situations.
• Physical ability to traverse stairs, move on uneven terrain, and assist children weighing up to 50 pounds.
