About the role
The Child Life Specialist provides psychosocial support to pediatric patients and families through education, therapeutic play, and procedural assistance to reduce stress and promote coping. They collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to assess patient needs, deliver developmentally appropriate explanations, and facilitate family involvement during illness and hospitalization.
Responsibilities
- Creating coping plans
- Supporting nonpharmacological pain management
- Assisting families through grief and bereavement processes
- Conducting psychosocial assessments
- Developing educational resources
- Overseeing play inventories
- Participating in training students
- Documenting services
- Supporting hospital programs
- Functioning as a mandated reporter for child abuse
Requirements
- Completion of 10 specific courses
- 600-hour internship
- Obtaining certification as a Child Life Specialist (CCLS) within one year
- BLS certification
