Child Care Director | Genesee County YMCA

About the Role
This position supports the work of the YMCA, a leading national nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living & social responsibility. The Child Care Director will provide direct oversight and development for all Genesee County Youth Development Programs, including Before and After School Enrichment (BASE) child care and Batavia Recreation programming. The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, a strong team-builder, and passionate about serving others with the experience to administer programming throughout the region. The Director is a visionary who sees the incredible potential in every child and is passionate about making a direct impact in the lives of children and families through growing existing programs while developing new and creative programming.
Responsibilities
- Develop relationships with state regulatory officials, school administration, staff and faculty, families, part-time staff, and program participants.
- Ensure proper delivery and development of daily curriculum, monitor (through regular site visits), evaluate, and improve program delivery.
- Hire, deploy, train, and develop staff; establish collaborative community partnerships.
- Market and promote assigned Y programs and work collaboratively with colleagues to accomplish collective goals.
- Oversee daily program operations, ensuring staff adhere to and exceed all state, local, and Y health and safety regulations.
- Assure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations (OCFS, DSS, NYS Health Dept., ADA accommodations).
- Manage, direct, and coordinate Before and After School Enrichment (BASE) child care programs (6), Summer Day Camp (Adventure and Young Explorer Camp), and Batavia Summer Recreation programs (4).
- Expand programs within the community in accordance with branch strategic and operating plans.
- Recruit, hire, train, develop, schedule, mentor, and direct staff (team size: 30-45 part-time employees).
- Review and evaluate staff performance; develop strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
- Proactively identify opportunities for employee development and staff retention; monitor and approve weekly schedules and payroll.
- Complete required annual OCFS training (15 hours).
- Travel 30% within Genesee County for inspections, supply delivery, supervision, training, and oversight.
- Develop, implement, and promote new programs; expand and enhance current programs to support engagement and retention.
- Assist in marketing and distribution of program information; support social media efforts.
- Train staff in coaching and guidance techniques.
- Seek, administer, track, and report on grant funding.
- Assist in YMCA fundraising activities, special events, and marketing.
- Demonstrate effective listening and compassion in all interactions to deliver the YMCA’s mission.
- Develop and maintain relationships with state child care licensing agencies, school administration, family groups, and related organizations.
- Respond to agency, family, and community inquiries and complaints.
- Order supplies and snacks to support curriculum, staff, and HEPA needs.
- Lead childcare and recreation registration processes; maintain proper records and department files.
- Compile program statistics, monitor and evaluate program effectiveness, and perform regular audits of program sites.
- Develop, manage, and control all budgets related to the position; ensure programs operate within budget and fees are collected.
- Handle billing for the Department of Social Services monthly.
- Train staff on emergency procedures, including first aid, accident reports, and the association’s emergency action plan.
- Regularly visit programs and actively engage with participants; serve as a substitute when needed.
- Attend branch and association-required trainings and meetings.
- Serve as an active member of the branch leadership team; perform other duties as needed to support branch operations.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree from a four-year accredited college or university (focus on education, child development, or related fields preferred).
- 18 credits in child development, education, or recreation required.
- NYS Children’s Program Administrator credential OR School Age Child Care Credential and an Associate’s degree may also be considered.
- Must be at least 21 years old with a valid driver’s license.
- 1-2 years of related experience as a Supervisor of Child Care Programs.
- Previous YMCA or nonprofit experience preferred.
- Goal-oriented with a willingness to work non-traditional schedules as needed.
- Ability to multi-task, take direction, and work well with others.
- Excellent organizational and planning skills.
- Computer proficiency and ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to manage conflict and resolve issues respectfully and calmly.
- Experience relating to diverse groups regardless of age, race, economic status, religion, or cultural differences.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Required Certifications
- Current CPR and First Aid certification (or obtain within 30 days of hire).
- Complete the following online trainings upon hire: Y-USA Before & After School Program, Child Abuse Prevention, Sexual Harassment, New Employee Orientation.
- OCFS Health & Safety Director Training within 60 days of hire.
Schedule
Typical work week consists of 40 hours per week. Available on-call during program hours (6:30am–9:00am and 2:00pm–6:00pm during the school year; 7:00am–6:00pm during summer) with the opportunity to flex the workweek to accommodate on-call needs.
