Chief Technology Officer
About the Role
Foodsmart is seeking a hands-on Chief Technology Officer (CTO) to lead our engineering organization during a high-growth phase. This role is crucial in driving commercial results, enhancing member experience, and improving clinical impact through technology. The CTO will work closely with the Chief Product Officer to build and ship high-quality products, leveraging a pod-based operating model and a strong foundational data layer.
Responsibilities
- Establish a leadership presence by staying close to the day-to-day product development, ensuring early detection of quality issues, quick decision-making, and fostering a sense of urgency across the organization.
- Deliver significant improvements in product and interface quality by implementing standards, ownership, and follow-through to eliminate recurring defects.
- Build a strong partnership with the Chief Product Officer and the broader business, operating as a unified product-and-engineering leadership unit to convert shared roadmaps into shipped software with clear trade-offs and predictable delivery.
- Implement lightweight, real cadences such as weekly shipped-work demos, engineering metrics, and capacity views to build confidence without adding heavy process.
- Assess, develop, and level the engineering, data, IT, and security organization, attracting top talent while managing infrastructure costs against benchmarks.
- Develop a long-range plan for domestic and offshore staffing, shaping the growth of the organization to balance capability, cost, and speed.
- Integrate AI into the development process and member/partner experience, moving from discussion to practical implementation with pragmatic judgment.
- Ensure the platform remains secure and compliant with HIPAA, SOC 2, and other healthcare standards.
Qualifications
- Mission-driven, with a genuine passion for solving access to affordable, healthy food and improving health outcomes for underserved populations.
- A hands-on builder with a strong bias for action, who leads from within the work and maintains a high standard of quality.
- Proven experience in consumer technology, with a track record of shipping commercially viable, consumer-grade products that customers love.
- Accountable ownership of outcomes, driving decisions to closure, and holding self and team to high standards.
- Strong partnership skills, particularly with product leaders, viewing product and engineering as a single delivery unit.
- Business-minded, prioritizing work that drives impact and speaking in terms of outcomes rather than activity.
- Talent magnet capable of attracting, assessing, developing, and retaining excellent technical talent.
- Excellent communication skills, able to translate between technical and business audiences and build alignment across the executive team and board.
- Fluent and pragmatic on AI, with early-adopter instincts and the judgment to apply AI where it creates leverage.
Preferred Qualifications
- Healthcare or digital health experience, with familiarity with HIPAA, SOC 2, and other compliance standards.
- Experience scaling engineering in a growth-stage, PE- or VC-backed company, balancing cost discipline with growth.
- Experience leading distributed engineering organizations across US and offshore teams, and building staffing strategies.
- Experience with two-sided marketplace or multi-stakeholder platforms.
- Self-aware, feedback-seeking growth mindset, with a kind and collaborative style that aligns with company values.
Experience
Typically 15+ years of relevant industry experience, including direct responsibility for setting org structure and technical vision across multiple products. A demonstrated pattern of staying close to the work, shipping quality products, and driving commercial outcomes in partnership with product is essential.
