About the Role
As a member of the executive leadership team, the Chief Quality Medical Officer (CQMO) provides clinical perspective, knowledge, experience, and leadership to ensure collaboration and alignment between the entity, system, and medical staff. The CQMO facilitates communication with the Medical Staff, oversees the entity's quality program, and is responsible for the overall quality of care, including patient experience and appropriate clinical utilization. This role involves participation in quality initiatives, clinical resource utilization, physician performance monitoring, and clinical outcomes. The CQMO assists with physician recruitment, retention, and medical staff credentialing, privileging, and reapplication activities. The role also acts as the entity’s liaison for clinical information technology and provides leadership over physician engagement and integration activities.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the executive team and Medical Staff leadership to develop and maintain a comprehensive strategy for monitoring, evaluating, and improving the quality of patient care, patient experience, and safety outcomes.
- Lead and sponsor continuous quality and safety performance improvement, ensuring successful deployment, execution, and sustainability of hospital quality performance improvement plans.
- Proactively identify opportunities and drive the entity toward highly reliable quality and safety outcomes using expertise in multi-disciplinary teams and collaborative approaches.
- Contribute to the achievement of hospital key performance indicators (KPIs) and key performance measures (KPMs) related to clinical quality improvement, harm reduction, and operating margin through cost management and value-based purchasing reimbursement.
- Improve utilization management benchmarks to reduce the total cost of care.
- Oversee the entity’s Infection Prevention program, including emerging diseases, multi-drug resistant organisms, and Joint Commission standards.
- Assist the hospital President in recruiting new medical staff based on quality and safety, and make decisions regarding new technology based on clinical need and evidence-based practice.
- Provide executive oversight for care management, addressing length of stay, patient flow, timely discharge, avoidable readmissions, and clinical outcomes management.
- Oversee development of physician performance measures, ensuring Medical Staff leaders have accurate data and understand its implications.
- Educate physicians and care providers on practice patterns and developments in CMS, value-based medicine, and public reporting of quality.
- Oversee Quality and Risk Management, addressing sentinel events and compliance with regulatory agency requirements.
- Design and implement effective physician recruitment, orientation, and retention activities.
- Ensure a smooth and efficient application process for medical staff credentialing, privileging, and reapplication.
- Partner with the President to inform and support entity physician contracting.
- Engage and support physician leaders through mentoring and collaboration to strengthen the clinical enterprise.
- Set collaborative expectations with physician leaders and ensure accountability for collective goals.
- Model clear and consistent communication among Medical Staff, administrative leaders, and community leaders.
- Participate in strategic planning, ensuring medical staff goals align with facility objectives and initiatives.
- Oversee systematic ideation programs to solicit clinical innovation opportunities and review physician proposals.
- Manage Medical Staff office and medical affairs functions, serving as a member of the Medical Executive Committee.
- Coordinate with system leaders to develop credentialing and privileging criteria and ensure efficient systems are in place.
- Provide administrative support to medical staff committees and facilitate the peer review process.
- Serve as the executive champion for adjudicating serious safety events and stay informed about state and federal healthcare updates.
