About the Role

The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) is seeking licensed physicians to take on leadership roles in directing medical divisions within County hospitals or overseeing general or specialized health services programs, either County-wide or within specific geographical areas.

Responsibilities

  • Formulate overall policies and plans, and direct medical activities within a hospital division.
  • Manage administrative aspects, including budget preparation, personnel functions, equipment procurement, and inter-divisional coordination.
  • Oversee the training of interns, resident physicians, and medical/technical students.
  • Establish, improve, or revise medical procedures to enhance service levels and personnel utilization.
  • Plan, direct, and supervise medical research, including the presentation and review of findings.
  • Provide consultative patient care, including examination, diagnosis, and treatment prescription, and review care provided by staff and resident physicians.
  • Deliver lectures and demonstrations to medical, nursing, and technical staff and students.

Requirements

  • Completion of a residency approved by an American Specialty Board in one or more designated specialties or equivalent training.
  • Two years of experience in medical practice, additional training, teaching, or investigative work.
  • Possession of a California State Physician and Surgeon's Certificate authorized by the Board of Medical Examiners of the State of California.
  • A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize alternative transportation for job-related essential functions.

Additional Information

All DHS workforce members must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of employment. Successful candidates must submit proof of vaccination or request an exemption during onboarding. Applicants must include a legible photocopy of their residency completion certificate and California State Physician and Surgeon's Certificate with their application.

The examination will consist of a self-assessment based on a Supplemental Questionnaire, covering experience, professional development, collaboration, leadership, and management skills. Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher to be placed on the eligible register.

Appointees may be required to work any shift, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
