About the Role
The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) provides clinical oversight and direction to all aspects of medical care within the hospital and health system, reporting administratively to the CEO and partnering with the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO). The role aims to create a patient-centered, integrated, and coordinated system focused on achieving population health outcomes consistent with the organization's mission and vision.
Responsibilities
- Oversee and manage the clinical staff, ensuring the quality, safety, and patient experience of care across all clinical settings.
- Ensure care is delivered in a culturally competent manner aligned with the needs and values of the Native American communities served.
- Serve as a collaborative member of the executive team, contributing to the development and implementation of the organization’s strategic plan and goals.
- Act as a spokesperson for clinical issues in collaboration with the executive team and marketing/communications.
- Lead the Medical Executive Committee and oversee the Medical Staff Office, including credentialing, peer review, quality, and discipline.
- Participate in key committees such as Pharmacy and Therapeutics, Quality Management, and Utilization Review.
- Ensure compliance with CMS conditions of participation and accreditation standards across all relevant hospital departments.
- Oversee medical staff recruitment and external medical staffing contracts.
- Lead efforts to improve quality and efficiency of care in collaboration with the quality department.
- Establish and enhance medical staff performance in clinical knowledge, practice-based learning, communication, professionalism, and system-based practice.
- Supervise Medical Directors across acute, ambulatory, and behavioral health care, and fulfill their duties in their absence.
- Oversee educational activities for medical students, residency development, residents, and other health professions.
- Manage clinical telehealth programs to support and improve care.
- Facilitate the sustainment of Nebraska state trauma tier four designation.
- Ensure adherence to policies and procedures by the medical staff and supervised departments.
- Support Medical Directors in ensuring timely and proper documentation of medical records.
- Participate in the review of Purchased Referred Care (PRC) consultant referrals with the PRC manager and case manager.
- Provide direct clinical services as agreed.
- Participate in morning rounds/huddles and support effective and timely ED transfers and admissions.
- Develop and oversee external relationships to expand coordinated/integrated specialty care services.
- Actively participate in systems to improve population health through care and research with internal and external partners.
- Assume the role of system CMO as the organization evolves, including oversight of behavioral health, alcohol and drug dependency, optometry, dentistry, elder care, EMS, and patient-centered integration of care.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Valid unrestricted medical license in any U.S. state or territory to practice as a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.).
- Valid Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) certification.
- Completion of an approved Medical Residency Program and board certification in Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, or Psychiatry, consistent with medical staff bylaws.
- Minimum of five years’ experience as a licensed physician, with at least five years of supervisory and leadership experience in a hospital and ambulatory environment.
- Public health leadership experience preferred.
- Demonstrated commitment to patient-centered and culturally competent care aligned with the values of the Native American communities served.
- Strong leadership and communication skills.
- Experience with goal-directed outcomes in quality, safety, patient experience, and employee engagement (Quadruple Aim).
- Experience with quality improvement tools (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma) preferred.
- Strategic thinking and planning abilities.
- Experience working with Native American communities.
Training Requirements
- Maintain licensure and certification.
Physical Requirements
- Normal to light office work, including the ability to lift up to 10 lbs.
- Regularly required to walk, stand, sit for extended periods, and use hands to operate a computer keyboard, phone, and office equipment.

Certificates, Licenses & Registrations
