Job Summary

The CLO provides vision, direction, and management for content development of learning and research products and staff learning. The position leads the organization's content team of professionals to be efficient, productive, and effective, fostering experimentation with applied teaching and learning experiences. The position directs efforts to develop a unique mix of adult learning and legal research, business, and management resources. The position develops the content strategic plan and programmatic structures for the Institute reflecting emerging changes in customer need and technology of the larger organization. A member of the executive leadership team, the position collaborates on setting and driving organizational vision and supporting strategies.

Responsibilities

  • 40% - Champion business transformation, oversee organizational change, and lead innovation to drive organizational vision, product strategy, and meet short- and long-term business objectives.
  • Collaborate with Executive Director and Chief Operations Officer in setting and driving organizational vision, product strategies, education/legal research strategies, and hiring needs.
  • Create ICLE content development strategies that are responsive to ICLE customer needs and align with larger ICLE goals.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Operating Officer to leverage emerging technologies to provide cutting-edge products to ICLE customers and improve overall ICLE product development, delivery, maintenance and efficiency.
  • Prepare detailed updates and forecasts on Institute progress.
  • Analyze current and potential ICLE markets and identify areas of threats and opportunities for growth.
  • Plan for and oversee implementation of organizational growth and process improvement.
  • Develop and communicate visions for ICLE's content and education strategic initiatives.
  • Lead major initiatives.
  • Build and maintain trusted relationships with key industry related stakeholders, ICLE staff, customers, partners, contributors and others that translate into new and continuing opportunities for ICLE.

Qualifications

  • Required Education and Work Experience: Juris Doctorate degree. Membership in the State Bar of Michigan. Minimum of 3 years of law practice experience. Minimum of 12 years of experience developing CLE. 15+ years of successful administrative and supervisory experience preferably in leadership roles. Understanding of adult learning, legal research, legal product development, and the needs of customers and potential customers in the legal marketplace. Extensive strategic planning experience. Understand and apply principles of strategic planning, data analysis, technology, and business performance metrics. Excellent interpersonal, communication skills, and presentation skills. In-depth understanding of advanced business planning and U of M policies, procedures, regulatory issues and departmental policies, rules, and regulations. Experience in key aspects of operations including finance, technology, business processes, legal products, adult learning, sales, marketing, web services, and customer research. Extensive project management skills. Understand and be able to apply principles of project management. Proven ability to develop, plan, and lead complex projects and deliver them on schedule and on budget. Ability to diagnose problems quickly, foresee potential issues, and implement plans to resolve. Experience creating, overseeing, and projecting budgets including presenting and explaining to others. Demonstrated ability to build positive working relationships with customers, industry related organizations, stakeholders, contributors, and co-workers; relationship management; negotiation; contributor recruitment. Understanding of customer interviews, survey applications and techniques, and user testing methods. Demonstrated ability to supervise and delegate effectively to professional staff and work effectively in teams; hiring, training, coaching, developing, evaluation, delegation, discipline; giving feedback and monitoring progress; ability to develop and leverage the skill of others. Experience coaching and leading teams through major change initiatives. Ability to travel to seminar and meeting locations in Michigan. Some evening and weekend meetings.
  • Desired Experience: Knowledge of and experience with team-based management. Experience with management and leadership at ICLE. Experience with customer-driven support and services.
