Because you work on one engagement at a time on a full-time basis, you're fully immersed in each client's environment, developing deep expertise across industries, systems, and business situations that most accountants never encounter in a traditional role. Job Description As a CFO at Promentrs, you are the highest-ranking financial leader for our clients. You will serve as a trusted strategic partner to the CEO, board of directors, and executive leadership team, owning everything from financial reporting and controls to capital strategy, fundraising, and long-term planning. You will be brought in for high-stakes, high-impact engagements where the work genuinely matters, not for routine maintenance or administrative oversight. What You'll Do Financial Strategy & Executive Leadership Serve as the senior financial executive for the client, partnering directly with the CEO, board, and ownership group to set and execute financial strategyDevelop and oversee long-term financial plans, revenue models, and scenario analyses that support business growth and sustainabilityTranslate complex financial data into clear, compelling narratives for boards, investors, and stakeholdersEvaluate the overall financial health of the organization and provide actionable recommendations to improve performance and reduce risk Financial Reporting, Controls & Compliance Own the integrity of all financial reporting, ensuring accuracy and full compliance with U.S. GAAP and applicable regulatory requirementsEstablish and maintain a rigorous internal control environment that protects the organization and supports scalable growthOversee the month-end and year-end close, financial statement preparation, and audit coordinationEnsure compliance with tax, regulatory, and reporting obligations across all relevant jurisdictions Capital, Treasury & Fundraising Lead cash flow management, working capital optimization, and treasury strategyEvaluate and advise on capital structure, debt financing, equity raises, and investor relationsGuide clients through fundraising processes, including preparation of investor materials, financial models, and due diligence supportProvide oversight of banking relationships, credit facilities, and investment activity FP&A, Budgeting & Performance Management Lead the annual budgeting process and rolling forecast cycles, ensuring alignment with strategic prioritiesDevelop and maintain KPI frameworks, management dashboards, and reporting systems that give leadership real-time visibility into business performancePartner with operations, sales, and department leaders to build financial accountability across the organization Transactions & Special Projects Support M&A activity including due diligence, deal structuring, purchase price allocations, and post-close integrationLead or advise on ERP and financial system implementations and upgradesGuide clients through IPO readiness, restructuring, carve-outs, and other transformational initiativesIdentify and drive process improvements that build a more effective, scalable finance function Team Leadership & Mentorship Build, lead, and develop the client's finance and accounting team, setting clear expectations and fostering a culture of accountability and excellenceEmbrace a mentorship mindset by sharing knowledge, developing talent, and elevating the capabilities of everyone around you; at Promentrs, developing others is just as important as delivering resultsPartner with controllers, accounting managers, and FP&A staff to ensure seamless execution across all financial functions What You Bring Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA license strongly preferred)Big 4 public accounting experience is highly preferred15or more years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3 years serving as a CFO, VP of Finance, or equivalent executive roleDeep expertise in U.S. GAAP, financial reporting, internal controls, and technical accounting standardsProven track record of serving as a strategic business partner to CEOs, boards, and investors across multiple industries or company stagesDemonstrated experience with capital markets, fundraising, M&A, or other complex financial transactionsStrong FP&A background, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial modelingExperience with large ERP and financial planning systems; comfort with data analytics tools and modern finance technologyExceptional communication and executive presence; you can command a boardroom and build trust with stakeholders at all levelsHighly adaptable, self-directed, and effective in ambiguous or ambiguous environmentsPrior experience in public accounting, consulting, or multi-client professional services is strongly preferredEntrepreneurial mindset; you lead with vision, operate with integrity, and drive results without waiting to be directed AI (Artificial Intelligence) Demonstrated proficiency with AI tools is required, including active use of Claude Cowork; candidates should be comfortable leveraging AI to streamline workflows, automate routine tasks, analyze financial data, and enhance productivity across accounting and finance functions. Compensation is project- or hourly-based and will be discussed during the interview process based on experience, availability, and engagement scope.
