About the role

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) will lead financial strategy, forecasting, compliance, and infrastructure for Movement Schools, a rapidly growing network of free public charter schools. Reporting directly to the CEO, the CFO will build scalable financial systems, transition to a fully in-house finance function, partner closely with the Board, and shape the long-term financial health and strategic direction of the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Lead financial strategy and forecasting for a growing, multi-entity organization with an approximately $50 million operating budget.
  • Build scalable financial systems and processes to support organizational growth.
  • Transition to a fully in-house finance function, ensuring compliance and accuracy in financial reporting.
  • Partner closely with the Board of Directors to ensure alignment on financial goals and strategies.
  • Drive sustainable growth by providing strategic insights and financial oversight.
  • Shape the long-term financial health and strategic direction of the organization.
  • Manage relationships with external partners and stakeholders, including funders and regulatory bodies.
  • Support the CEO in shaping the organization’s financial policies and procedures.
  • Ensure adherence to all relevant financial regulations and standards.

Requirements

  • Proven track record of success in a similar role, ideally in a non-profit or charter school setting.
  • Experience in leading a finance team, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial management, and budgeting practices.
  • Experience in managing complex financial systems and processes.
  • Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams, including the Board of Directors and external partners.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to articulate financial strategies and results.
  • Experience in strategic planning and financial modeling.
  • Knowledge of state and federal regulations applicable to non-profit organizations.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • CPA certification preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in finance and accounting, preferably in a non-profit or charter school setting.
  • Experience in leading a finance team and managing financial systems.
  • Experience in strategic planning and financial modeling.
  • Experience in working with boards of directors and external partners.

Based in Charlotte, NC or Atlanta, GA, with 30–40% travel between regions and schools.
