About the role

The Chief Estimator will lead the estimating team across the company, focusing on continuous improvement through new software and procedural solutions. They will mentor, support, and develop professionals on challenging multi-discipline projects.

Responsibilities

  • Follow ethical standards and maintain client confidentiality.

  • Manage the estimating department, enforce policies, and monitor the quality, accuracy, and timeliness of estimates and proposals.
  • Quickly understand RFPs and scopes of work, generating order of magnitude budgets.
  • Coordinate proposal estimate delivery with the proposal delivery group, assigning and managing employees.
  • Determine appropriate estimating methods and resources for various estimate classes.
  • Provide guidance on overcoming project document deficiencies, including scope clarifications and risk identification.
  • Develop new processes and procedures to improve estimating and proposal efforts.
  • Review and incorporate historical data into unit and hour figures for estimates.
  • Work with business development, project management, engineering, and other functional departments to prepare and evaluate bids.
  • Maintain documentation to support estimates.
  • Develop and review estimate and proposal presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Aid in the review and development of execution plans for undertaking the work.
  • Ensure alignment between estimate basis and execution plan.
  • Perform regular reviews of estimating work.
  • Participate in constructability reviews and cost-saving exercises.
  • Ensure estimates are detailed enough to trace back to defining RFP documentation.
  • Review and approve preliminary schedules, indirect costs, staff, craft support, construction equipment selection, and cranes.
  • Assign contingency based on project risk.
  • Coordinate and prioritize work on multiple ongoing estimates and proposals.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction, or related field or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 10+ years’ experience in estimating, field engineering, or site construction leadership, including 5+ years of management experience.
  • Familiarity with various contract types, from Lump Sum to Time and Materials.
  • Ability to visualize the finished product from drawings and other documents.
  • Strong knowledge of estimating techniques, engineering disciplines, and cost control techniques.
  • Experience estimating all types and sizes of industrial projects.
  • Ability to supervise estimating personnel and prepare complex estimates.
  • Experience managing and motivating a team of professionals.
  • Good oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to develop and present clear and concise presentations to clients and senior management.
  • Understanding of operating processes at facilities like refineries, terminals, power plants, mining, or other heavy industrial facilities.
  • Self-motivated, enthusiastic team player willing to work with others and adopt new ideas and methods.
  • Good computer skills including an operating knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Familiarity with estimating software like Sage (Timberline) and Aspen (ACCE).
  • Experience with project scheduling software (MS Project or Primavera) and databases.
