Chief Engineer - Hybrid Propulsion Systems
About The Role
The University of Nottingham is seeking an outstanding engineering leader to take up the role of Chief Engineer – Hybrid Propulsion Systems. This is a senior technical leadership role within one of the University’s major translational engineering capabilities.
Responsibilities
- Provide engineering authority and delivery leadership for complex experimental and industrial programmes in hybrid propulsion systems, electrification and associated advanced engineering technologies.
- Lead multidisciplinary engineering teams, provide senior technical judgement during complex programme delivery, and ensure that engineering activities are delivered safely, credibly and on schedule.
- Suit an experienced engineer who can operate credibly from first principles through to system-level engineering decision making.
- Work flexibly across adjacent technical areas where required, supporting wider engineering delivery, facility utilisation and industrial programmes as the needs of the University and its partners evolve.
- Work as part of the senior leadership team and provide engineering insight to support programme planning, technical delivery, capability development and external engagement.
- Close working with academic and research colleagues, project teams, technical staff, operational colleagues and industrial partners to ensure that technical strategies are translated into credible engineering programmes, demonstrators and experimental outcomes.
Requirements
We are looking for a senior engineer with substantial experience of leading complex engineering activity in an industrial, research, test, demonstrator or experimental environment.
Qualifications
- A postgraduate degree in a relevant engineering discipline, or equivalent experience, is expected.
- Membership of a relevant professional engineering body, or the ability to demonstrate equivalent professional standing, would be advantageous.
Skills
You will bring deep engineering knowledge relevant to one or more of the following areas: hybrid propulsion systems, electrification, high-power electrical systems, thermal systems, cryogenic systems, propulsion systems, environmental testing, or a closely related discipline.

Pay
£59,966 to £85,394 per annum, depending on skills and experience. In addition, a market supplement of £8,300 per annum will be paid (pro-rata if applicable and subject to review every two years).
Schedule
Your working hours will be 36.25 hours per week. Due to the senior nature of the role, a flexible approach to working hours is required, and occasional additional hours may be necessary to meet operational needs and fulfil the responsibilities of the post.
