About the role

The Chief Engineer is responsible for ensuring the highest level of professionalism while meeting clients' needs and achieving 100% uptime throughout the engineering team. This role involves operational management and daily leadership of the engineering team to safely, efficiently, and cost-effectively operate machinery and systems. The Chief Engineer will implement and manage a reliability-based maintenance function, protect and improve the value of client assets, and ensure building engineering systems perform their intended functions.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors and maintains refrigeration, air conditioning, heating, ventilating, hot water equipment, pumps, valves, piping, filters, and other mechanical/electrical equipment; reviews logs to ensure proper operation and reports problems as needed.
  • Performs preventive maintenance tasks and oversees repair and preventive maintenance (P.M.) of HVAC systems, determining repair frequency.
  • Ensures adequate inventory of tools and supplies, including preparing purchase orders, sourcing materials, and checking inventory levels and equipment conditions.
  • Oversees activities of contractors working within the building, ensuring safety and compliance with regulatory laws and guidelines.
  • Identifies safety hazards, implements remediation, and administers safety training programs.
  • Maintains infrastructure and compliance documentation, including building drawings and regulatory compliance records.
  • Supervises and manages building engineers and maintenance staff, including hiring, training, and development.
  • Develops and ensures understanding of the Facility Work Flow (FWF) process among staff, engineers, tenants, and contractors.
  • Implements QA/QC processes and facilitates MEP and infrastructure assessments.
  • Emphasizes preventive over corrective maintenance and supports staff schedule changes.
  • Assists with design standards and operational issues, providing training and support to expand staff capabilities.
  • Stays updated on safety and code changes through seminars and educational means.
  • Inputs information into client work order tracking systems for unscheduled jobs and provides technical support for projects.
  • Responds to emergency situations, troubleshoots and repairs problems, and may be on-call for rapid response.
  • Conducts general housekeeping in mechanical/electrical rooms and completes work in accordance with company Standard Operating Procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional education.
  • One-year certificate from college or technical school, or five to seven years of related experience/training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Universal CFC certification.
  • Technical degree in HVAC or five or more years of related experience.
  • Active Refrigeration Technician’s license.

Working Conditions

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, work in tight spaces, and perform physical labor related to maintenance and repair.
  • Moderate to loud noise levels in the work environment.
  • Possible exposure to moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, wet/humid conditions, high places, and outside weather conditions.
  • Reasonable accommodations available for individuals with disabilities.
  • Availability to respond to after-hours emergencies as necessary.
