The Manning Institute of Biotechnology (MIoB) is dedicated to transforming scientific discoveries into treatments and cures, aiming to improve health outcomes for patients in Virginia and beyond. Funded by a $100 million gift from Paul and Diane Manning, the MIoB will occupy a 350,000-square-foot facility in Charlottesville, opening in late 2027. This institute serves as a key player in the growing biotech ecosystem, fostering collaboration among UVA's Schools of Medicine, Engineering, Arts & Sciences, and Data Science.
Position Overview
The University of Virginia is seeking an experienced development professional to serve as the inaugural Chief Development Officer (CDO) for the Manning Institute of Biotechnology. Reporting to the Senior Associate Vice President for UVA Health Development, the CDO will lead a comprehensive philanthropic program, focusing on scholarships, professorships, education and workforce programs, and supporting the institute's capital facility and research initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
Design and execute a comprehensive development strategy and campaign plan that aligns with MIoB strategic priorities.
Establish fundraising priorities, goals, metrics, and timelines, and serve as a thought partner for MIoB leadership.
Engage Institute leadership and faculty in fundraising efforts.
Develop and oversee cultivation and engagement strategies for major and principal gift prospects.
Manage a portfolio of prospective donors, focusing on individuals, foundations, industry partners, and disease-based organizations.
Partner with the University’s Corporate & Foundation Relations team on high-level industry partnerships.
Collaborate with development leaders, deans, and faculty on fundraising strategies and proposals for shared priorities.
Launch an Advisory Board for the Manning Institute, consisting of industry, philanthropy, science, and public policy leaders.
Provide strategic staffing and support to Advisory Board members, preparing them for donor cultivation events and leading by example.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required.
At least five years of previous fundraising experience.
Demonstrated success in identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and closing major and principal gifts.
Exceptional interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, with the ability to translate complex scientific and technical concepts into compelling narratives.
Strong project management skills and comfort operating in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
Commitment to the University of Virginia’s values and the highest standards of professional ethics and donor stewardship.
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced degree preferred.
Experience fundraising in biomedical research, engineering, or a related technical field.
Existing networks within the biotechnology, life sciences, or healthcare philanthropy communities.
Experience staffing and developing volunteer advisory boards or campaign committees.
Knowledge of Charlottesville’s biotech and research ecosystem or demonstrated ability to build regional presence rapidly.
Physical Demands
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. Occasional travel to attend meetings and programs is required.
Salary Range
The anticipated hiring range is $200,000–$220,000, commensurate with education and experience.
Position Type & Work Location
This is an exempt-level, benefited position. The successful candidate will live or be willing to relocate within approximately 50 miles of the University in Charlottesville, Virginia.
