Main Purpose of Job:

This position serves as the Medical Director and Chief of the Center for Immunization. This Center is complex with responsibility for management and oversight of multiple CDC Cooperative Agreements with a total budget of approximately $9.6 million, as well as for multiple large and small procurements, and funding allocations to all 24 local health departments to support a broad spectrum of vaccination activities.

About the Role

  • Maintains and operates ImmuNet, Maryland’s Immunization Information System and MY IR, a consumer portal for immunization records.
  • Oversees both the Vaccines for Children (VFC) program with over 600 participating medical providers and the newly established MVP vaccination program for adults.
  • Maintains and strengthens collaborations with various professional associations representing Maryland health care providers, pharmacists and other vaccinators.
  • Provides direction and oversight to local health departments investigating and controlling vaccine preventable diseases.

Responsibilities

  • Provides experienced clinical and public health leadership in directing, coordinating, and promoting the work of the Center to local health departments, medical providers and professional associations.
  • Uses experience and knowledge in the area of vaccine-preventable diseases, childhood and adult immunizations, immunization information systems, and program management to provide statewide leadership and to serve as the MDH’s liaison to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention related to immunizations.
  • Works after normal working hours, on weekends and holidays as needed to respond to reports of vaccine-preventable diseases and public health emergencies.
  • Serves as an MDH physician on call as scheduled.

Requirements

  • Doctorate Degree in Medicine (MD) from an accredited college or university.
  • Valid Maryland license to practice medicine.
  • Board Certification.
  • At least two years of medical practice.

Qualifications

  • Board Certified Pediatrician with experience in clinical and public health leadership directing, coordinating, and promoting immunization programs.
  • Knowledge of the medical management of vaccine-preventable diseases, public health practices related to vaccinations, project management, communications, policy development, and community capacity-building.
