About the role

The Chief Building Engineer is a senior on-site facilities leader responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operation, maintenance, repair, and overall performance of a USPS facility and its surrounding grounds. This role provides technical leadership and hands-on oversight of building systems, preventive and corrective maintenance activities, supplier performance, compliance requirements, and operational reporting to ensure the facility remains safe, reliable, and fully mission-capable. Serving as a key liaison with the Facility Manager and USPS Contracting Officer’s Representative (COR), the Chief Building Engineer supports work planning, issue resolution, project recommendations, and continuous improvement across all facility operations.

Responsibilities

  • Work full-time on-site during normal working hours and provide facility engineering leadership for daily operations and maintenance activities.
  • Respond to facility issues by phone or on-site, as needed, on a 24-hour basis.
  • Report directly to the Facility Manager and USPS COR regarding facility operations, maintenance status, and critical issues.
  • Ensure compliance with USPS guidelines related to insecticides, chemicals, and hazardous materials.
  • Supervise and direct all services required to operate and maintain the facility and grounds in accordance with Addendum requirements.
  • Create and maintain detailed work plans that support all Addendum requirements and facility maintenance objectives.
  • Maintain accurate logs of maintenance deficiencies, issues, and operational concerns.
  • Maintain files and correspondence related to services performed by suppliers and sub-suppliers.
  • Submit monthly reports within five business days following month-end, including issues affecting operation and maintenance of the facility and grounds.
  • Prepare and submit additional reports as required and participate in discussions with USPS regarding facility work plans.
  • Make recommendations for facility projects supported by cost estimates and appropriate documentation.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s degree, technical certification, or vocational training in building systems, facilities maintenance, mechanical systems, electrical systems, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 6 years of progressively responsible experience in building operations, facilities maintenance, or engineering support in a commercial, industrial, institutional, or government environment, including experience leading or coordinating maintenance activities.
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing daily facility operations, preventive and corrective maintenance, work planning, and supplier or subcontractor performance to support safe and efficient building operations.
  • Working knowledge of building systems, facility safety practices, and compliance requirements related to chemicals, hazardous materials, and operational maintenance standards.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to prepare reports, document maintenance issues, discuss work plans, and communicate effectively with management, customers, and stakeholders.
  • Ability to assess facility needs, recommend corrective actions or improvement projects, and support project estimates and documentation for operational or capital work.
  • Ability to work full-time on-site during normal working hours and respond to urgent facility issues after hours, as needed.

Pay

Expected salary: $70,000 - $75,000 per year.

Schedule

Full-time on-site during normal working hours with on-call availability for urgent facility issues.
