About the role
Battelle is seeking a Chemist to work full time in the Clinical Chemistry Branch (CCB) within DLS. The CCB develops and improves methods for assessing disease status associated with and the risk for selected chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and hormonal disorders. The Branch serves as a reference laboratory for these measurements by providing standards that are used as accuracy points by other laboratories around the world.
Responsibilities
- Aid in developing and validating metrological reference methods.
- Optimize and apply existing reference methods for lipids (total cholesterol, total glycerides, HDL-cholesterol).
- Perform sample preparation using automation equipment.
- Analyze samples by mass spectrometry, ultracentrifugation, and spectrophotometry.
- Operate and maintain analytical equipment, including instrument operation, problem solving, and maintenance.
- Evaluate laboratory data to assess the analytical quality of the reference method and other routine clinical laboratory methods.
- Apply different statistical methods and create software codes (R, Excel macros) as needed.
- Draft technical communications documents, including protocols, reports, project updates, presentations, and CLIA and ISO documents.
- Conduct all activities in compliance with relevant ISO, CLIA, and DLS guidelines and create and maintain relevant ISO documents.
- Carry out all tasks independently with minimal guidance or assistance from CDC project leads.
- Adhere to universal precautions regarding the handling of biological samples and biological waste.
- Comply with CDC/NCEH/DLS, ISO, and CLIA 88 guidelines regarding laboratory protocols and quality control.
- Adhere to the confidentiality of laboratory data.
- Follow Battelle and CDC/NCEH/DLS policies regarding laboratory safety and security.
Qualifications
- BS in Chemistry or Biochemistry or related scientific field with 2-5 years relevant experience or equivalent.
- Technical knowledge and experience with analytical procedures and instrumentation such as chromatography, mass spectrometry, and automation.
- High level of skill using Microsoft Office products such as Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook.
- Good problem-solving, communication, and writing skills.
- Ability to further develop existing planning and management skills as needed.
- Good teamwork with internal and external collaborators.
- U.S. Citizenship.
Pay
The salary range for this role is $66,500 to $94,800 per year, in addition to our comprehensive benefits package. A candidate’s salary is determined by various factors, including but not limited to education, relevant work experience, skills, and certifications. Salary ranges may vary based on geographic location and market conditions.
