Chemist Assistant

About the Role

This position primarily involves accepting and picking up wastewater samples at all Pasco County Wastewater Treatment Plants, preserving samples, and assisting chemists with laboratory tasks. Weekend work (Saturday and Sunday) is required.

Responsibilities

• Accepts and picks up wastewater samples at all wastewater treatment plants, follows chain of custody protocols, and returns samples to the laboratory.
• Preserves samples upon receipt at the laboratory (if not already preserved).
• Washes glassware and sample bottles following specific dishwashing protocols, including handling acids.
• Assists in assembling bottle kit orders for clients and delivers sample bottles and reports to wastewater treatment plants.
• Maintains shipping logs for contract lab within the document control system.
• Conducts routine daily maintenance of the laboratory vehicle.
• Assists with answering the laboratory phone and window when necessary.
• Performs other duties as required.

Requirements

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.
• Ability to maintain accurate records and follow written and oral directions.
• Ability to safely operate a Pasco County vehicle in accordance with Florida traffic laws.
• Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• One (1) year of experience with record keeping and computer operation.
• Laboratory experience preferred.
• Valid Florida driver’s license.

Physical Demands

• Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and push or pull heavy objects (may use a dolly or work with a team member for heavier items).
• Requires standing, walking, bending, stooping, and sitting.
• Ability to communicate effectively using verbal, written, and visual communication.

Schedule

Includes Saturday and Sunday work hours.
