Why does the job exist?

This position is responsible for conducting proficiency tests, standard material characterizations, potential event exercises, real-world event responses, and other sample analyses for the Chemical Threat Analytical Response (CTAR) section. It also supports the staff manager with supervising personnel, reporting results, maintaining quality control, and developing and validating analytical methods.

  • Conducts proficiency tests, standard material characterizations, potential event exercises, real-world event responses, and other sample analyses for the CTAR section.
  • Supports the staff manager with supervising personnel, reporting results, maintaining quality control, and developing and validating analytical methods.
  • Performs complex chemical analyses using liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, and mass spectrometry.
  • Maintains inventory, procures instruments, performs instrument maintenance, and troubleshoots issues.
  • Supports development of new analytical methods, manages grant funding and budgets, prepares required deliverables, and assists with laboratory outreach activities.

Who are the customers?

  • The Centers for Disease Control - as part of the requirements contained within the Public Health Emergency Preparedness federal Grant for New Mexico and the State Biomonitoring Programs.

Minimum Qualification

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry or closely related field.
  • Four (4) years paid experience in chemical experimentation and analysis in a laboratory setting.

Employment Requirements

  • Designated as a safety sensitive position.
  • Subject to pre-employment and random testing for alcohol and/or drugs in accordance with federal and state law.
  • Must pass DOJ/FBI security clearance for access to laboratories holding Select Agents.
  • Must obtain Hepatitis B and Rabies vaccinations.
  • Must have a valid New Mexico Driver's License and a current Defensive Driving Course certificate.
  • May require extended standing, repetitive trunk/arm/hand/neck movements, use of high voltage electronic instrumentation, and high-pressure gas cylinders.
  • Must be able to lift/push up to 50 lbs.
