Chemical Operator
Hourly rate: $27.40. Rates are determined by role, level, and location; the posted rate reflects the starting rate for new hires. Some facilities are subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements. Compensation details listed reflect the hourly rate only and do not include benefits, pension contributions, overtime, or shift premiums.
About the role
This position is diverse in mechanical ability and involves general plant operator duties. The Chemical Operator is an integral part of the production team, responsible for the overall chemical production process, including weighing, mixing chemical ingredients, monitoring equipment, and the manufacturing process. The ideal candidate will be attentive, knowledgeable, and collaborative, working with other production team members to develop optimal processes and products.
Responsibilities
- Perform chemical manufacturing operations safely and effectively.
- Record information such as ingredients, weights, and temperature, and input data into the database.
- Monitor and control pressure and temperature of chemical process equipment.
- Operate plant equipment according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Handle, transport, and process chemicals safely.
- Document plant processes and record production data.
- Operate tank trucks and railcar vessels, including opening, loading, and unloading product, as well as operating pumps, piping, and valves.
- Troubleshoot issues with production equipment and processes.
- Maintain plant inventory records.
- Operate mobile equipment, including backhoes, track mobiles, forklifts, and other machinery.
- Perform daily plant upkeep, maintenance, and housekeeping duties.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- 1-3 years of experience in chemical manufacturing or general manufacturing/production.
- Experience working with forklifts preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft programs, maintenance management systems, and email.
- Aptitude for mechanics.
- Willingness to comply with safety and quality regulations, including wearing protective gear.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs or more.
Working Environment
- Chemical manufacturing plant producing Liquid Alum, ACH, and PAC chemicals.
- Physical capability to work in 100-degree ambient temperatures while wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Tasks may require climbing stairs and ladders, and lifting within OSHA guidelines.
- Exposure to outside elements, including radiant heat or cold, as part of the normal work environment.
- Rotating shifts: scheduled 8-hour days with intermittent 14–16-hour days for emergency operations or repairs.
- Adherence to all plant safety guidelines, including Confined Space, Working at Heights, Management of Change, Hot Work, and Operating Procedures.
