About the role
The City of Mesquite seeks a Chemical Application Technician to mix and apply chemical pesticides and herbicides to City parks, athletic fields, medians, rights-of-way, ponds, and special maintenance areas. This position requires general supervision and operates Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM, with occasional overtime and weekend work.
Responsibilities
- Mix and apply chemical pesticides and herbicides to City parks, athletic fields, medians, rights-of-way, ponds, and special maintenance areas.
- Prepare and maintain records of chemical usage.
- Maintain inventory of chemicals and equipment; organize and maintain chemical room; issue chemicals to park maintenance personnel for usage.
- Aid in preparing lawn and ornamental chemical budget and bid forms.
- Drive to and from destinations as assigned by Supervisor.
- Operate a variety of spray equipment including power sprayer, self-contained sprayer, push sprayer, and backpack sprayer.
- Train and supervise chemical applications of other Park Services Division employees.
- Perform a variety of park maintenance activities when not applying chemicals including maintenance of landscape areas such as tree pruning, tree/landscape planting, and inspecting various sites for lawn and ornamental pest/disease infestations or problems.
- Clean and maintain spray equipment and vehicles; service and perform minor repairs on equipment as necessary.
- Perform random site inspections of areas treated for target pests.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Two (2) years of direct experience in the mixing and application of herbicides and pesticides in a landscaping, park, or grounds maintenance environment.
- Possession of a valid driver's license.
- Possession of a Non-Commercial Certified Applicator license issued by the State of Texas Structural Pest Control Service with certification in the categories of Lawn and Weed OR Possession of a license from the Texas Department of Agriculture with certification in categories of Rights-of-Way Pest Control and Plant Pest and Weed Control.
- Obtain certification in the category of Aquatics through the Texas Department of Agriculture within six months of employment as a condition of continued employment.
