About the role
The Ship/Terminal Checker records cargo movement—discharge, loading, and stowage on vessels as well as load-out and receiving through the terminal to and from customer carriers—in a responsible, safe, and efficient manner.
Responsibilities
- Count, inspect, sort, identify, and record storage location of all cargo discharging (or coming off a vessel).
- Count, inspect, sort, identify, and record stow location of all cargo stowed (or being loaded onto a vessel).
- Load and unload trucks.
- Receive cargo on trucks.
- Ship out cargo from yard to trucks.
- Load rail cars.
- Mark and take dimensions of cargo.
- Keep written tallies and records.
- Record data using electronic equipment (tablet and scanner).
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- One year of experience in shipping and receiving (warehouse, yards, stevedoring) is beneficial.
- Attention to detail in following and performing basic instructions.
- Conscientious with pride in work.
- Proven record of dependability and working autonomously.
- Strong mathematical skills for keeping counts and tallies.
- Available for working long hours, holidays, and weekends.
- Ability to read and write in English; bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.
- Capable of keeping counts and tallies.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
- Work is 100% outdoors, exposed to weather conditions such as heat, rain, and cold on a daily basis.
- Occasional work in closed spaces (warehouse, vessel hatch, etc.).
- Capable of walking, bending, stooping, climbing ladders up to 100 ft high, and having fast physical reactions (jump, move).
- Ability to work in a noisy environment.
