About The Position

As a Check Payments Specialist, you will serve as a subject matter expert for check processing operations and payment services across the credit union. You'll support the accurate processing, reconciliation, exception handling, and resolution of check-related transactions while ensuring compliance with regulations and internal policies. This role partners closely with branches, support departments, vendors, and external partners to maintain efficient operations and deliver exceptional service to members and employees.

Position Type: Full-Time

Compensation Range: $20.00/hr. - $22.00/hr. *Hiring rates may be dependent on a number of factors, including years of directly related work experience, education, geographic location or special skills*

Location: On-site at our headquarters in Endwell, NY.

Responsibilities

  • Process and reconcile check transactions across multiple channels, including teller, ATM, Remote Deposit Capture (RDC), and OnUs processing.
  • Utilize Check 21 systems to prepare, validate, and transmit image cash letters while ensuring critical processing deadlines are met.
  • Research, investigate, and resolve check-related disputes, exceptions, fraudulent activity, and member inquiries.
  • Ensure compliance with credit union policies, Regulation CC, Uniform Commercial Code requirements, and Federal Reserve operating procedures.
  • Provide guidance and support to branches and internal departments on check processing procedures, policies, and operational issues.
  • Partner with internal teams, vendors, and external partners to support system enhancements, operational improvements, and check-related projects.
  • Assist with internal and external audit requests and support risk management initiatives.
  • Provide backup operational support and adapt to changing priorities, responsibilities, and business needs.

  • Opportunities for process improvement are identified and implemented to strengthen operational effectiveness.
  • Strong partnerships are maintained with internal teams, vendors, auditors, and external business partners.
  • Operational disruptions and processing exceptions are minimized through proactive monitoring and problem solving.

Requirements

  • Check processing activities are completed accurately, efficiently, and within established deadlines.

  • Operational disruptions and processing exceptions are minimized through proactive monitoring and problem solving.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate degree.
  • 2–3 years of financial services, payments, operations, or office administration experience.
  • Experience with check processing, reconciliation, exception handling, or payment operations.
  • National Check Professional (NCP) certification.
  • Knowledge of Check 21 processing, Regulation CC, Uniform Commercial Code requirements, or related payment regulations.
