Chaseburg Butter Maker (Mon/Tue, E/O Weekend 5pm-5am)
Location – Onsite at Chaseburg Creamery in Chaseburg, WI. This is a safety-sensitive, hourly position eligible for a 3% annual incentive bonus based on cooperative and individual performance.
About the role
The Butter Maker is responsible for making butter according to the cooperative’s specifications and production requirements, as well as the sanitation of related equipment. The Creamery operates 365 days a year, including holidays.
Responsibilities
- Take daily cream and buttermilk inventories and verify vessel temperatures prior to starting production.
- Ensure equipment and areas are sanitary and fully operational before production begins.
- Transfer cream and buttermilk between vessels and to/from the churn via touch screen interface.
- Operate the churn to produce butter of specified grade and quality, performing quality control tests.
- Record production data via physical and digital records.
- Monitor the churn for malfunctions or quality concerns and report issues to a supervisor.
- Collect butter samples from each churn to test for moisture, butterfat, flavor/odor (grade), and color content.
- Operate the CIP system to clean churns, vessels, lines, and pumps, and maintain records of chemical concentrations.
- Complete assigned daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and bi-annual sanitation tasks.
- Follow and comply with good manufacturing, safety, and quality assurance policies and practices.
- Accurately complete record-keeping paperwork and logbooks.
- Safely use the chemical dispensing system, including proper labeling and transportation of chemicals.
- Read and comply with chemical use instructions, Safety Data Sheets, Personal Protective Equipment, and Lockout/Tagout procedures.
- Assist with daily assembly, cleaning, swabbing, and sanitizing of butter packager and printer machines.
- Obtain certification for regular use of electric pallet jacks.
- Maintain chart recorders, including changing charts and pens.
- Operate case/carton printers, butter packer, case packer, bulk filler, and reworker as assigned.
- Assist with the plant quality program, including taking quality samples and using quality testing equipment such as the X-ray detector and recording scale weights.
- Assist with palletizing, shrink-wrapping, and tagging pallets for shipping.
- Hand pack/tape cases as needed.
- Assist with general plant cleaning and/or property maintenance as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned by a supervisor.
Requirements
- Current butter maker’s license is preferred, or ability to obtain one.
- Current butter grader’s license is preferred, or ability to obtain one.
- Basic computer skills required; experience with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word preferred.
- Working knowledge of good manufacturing practices.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Must be able to work weekends.
- Sanitation experience in a food processing environment preferred.
- Neat and legible handwriting.
- Manual dexterity to perform frequent wrist twisting and bending motions.
- Ability to read and interpret critical information and follow specific instructions.
- Ability to frequently lift/carry 50 pounds, occasionally lift up to 80 pounds with assistance, and push/pull up to 2,500 pounds using material handling equipment.
- Ability to occasionally bend, twist/turn, reach above shoulders, and climb throughout the shift.
- Basic math skills, including arithmetic, to perform and interpret calculations related to count, weight, and time.
- Effective collaborative skills; must perform well in group settings.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to follow instructions and express ideas clearly.
- Strong work ethic with a history of good attendance.
Pay
Base hourly range: $21.37 – $25.91 per hour. The typical starting wage for a new hire with little or no experience is $22.00 per hour. This position also includes the following shift premiums:
- $2.00 per hour between 6:00 PM and 12:00 AM.
- $3.00 per hour between 12:00 AM and 6:00 AM.
- $2.00 per hour on Saturdays and Sundays.
The compensation package may also include incentive compensation opportunities in the form of discretionary bonuses. The final base hourly wage will be determined based on factors such as geographic location, skills, education, and experience, with consideration for internal pay equity.
