About the role
The Prince George’s County Department of Health is seeking a Charge Nurse - Lactation/Nutrition Consultant (Community Health Nurse 3A) grade A24 position in the Family Health Services Division (WIC Program).
Responsibilities
- Provides advanced lactation care as an IBCLC while functioning as Charge Nurse to ensure appropriate triage, clinical decision making, and quality of care for breastfeeding participants.
- Captures and analyzes patient records for accuracy, completeness, and appropriateness; takes action if indicated.
- Serves as the lead clinical resource for breastfeeding care, triaging referrals, prioritizing high-risk cases, and assigning or coordinating services to appropriate staff.
- Coordinates and oversees local agency breastfeeding promotion and support activities, ensuring alignment with WIC program goals, public health priorities, and clinical standards of care.
- May exercise limited supervisory duties and responsibilities over subordinate staff, planning and coordinating the daily work activities of subordinate staff such as nurses, therapists, health aides, and clerical support staff.
- Coordinates the provision of nursing/medical care services for clients/patients with other agencies/programs.
- Provides orientation, on-the-job training, and continuing education for staff supervised.
- Serves on departmental and interagency committees, task forces, commissions, and boards.
- Interprets departmental policies and procedures for staff.
- Assists staff with determining nursing and mental health care needed by complex patients and in the resolution of crisis situations.
- Aids in the development of standards and procedures related to the provision of services and assures compliance with them.
- Trips new referrals to determine how quickly patients need to be seen and assigns cases.
- Collects and summarizes program data, submits required reports of program activities and accomplishments to program chief or other administrators.
- Aids in budget development and preparation by providing narrative and statistical information.
Requirements
- Graduation from an accredited school, college, university, or an equivalent program with a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or a related health field.
- Two (2) years of post-licensure community health nursing experience.
- Possession of a valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Maryland issued by the Maryland State Board of Nursing at the time of appointment.
- Possession of and maintenance of a valid Class C driver's license to operate a motor vehicle when required for the performance of job-related duties.
- Possession of a valid cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification at time of appointment.
Qualifications
- Formal training in nutrition science and current certification as an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).
- EPIC Electronic Medical Records (EMR) experience.
Skills
- Strong communication skills.

- Knowledge of nutrition science and lactation care.
- Experience in healthcare administration and supervision.
