Chaplain - Sharp Memorial - Variable Shifts - Per Diem

Shift start and end times are variable. 8-hour shifts totaling 40 hours per week, with availability needed Friday through Sunday as required. No on-call duty.

Pay

The hourly pay range is $40.510 – $52.280 – $58.550. The actual rate and pay grade will depend on factors such as experience, skills, education, alignment with internal candidates, marketplace conditions, and employer practices.

Responsibilities

• Provide spiritual care and counseling for patients, families, and Sharp HealthCare team members, respecting diversity in culture, gender expressions, sexual orientation, and spiritual/religious practices.
• Deliver on-call services as needed. If based at Sharp Memorial, provide spiritual care support across Sharp Metropolitan Medical Campus, including Sharp Memorial Hospital, Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women and Newborns, and Sharp Mesa Vista.
• Conduct spiritual assessments, interventions, and care plans, documenting them within the shift (or within 5 days for hospice).
• Deliver individual and group spiritual care in designated clinical areas, including crisis intervention (e.g., Code Blue, trauma codes).
• Assist patients, families, and staff with bioethical issues, organ donation, advance healthcare directives, and treatment decisions aligned with patient values.
• Facilitate rituals and services, such as newborn rituals, end-of-life ceremonies, memorial services, and other events to comfort and encourage staff.
• Set and adjust daily priorities based on patient/family needs, communicating these with spiritual care staff and establishing visit frequencies.
• Maintain positive communication and relationships with staff, physicians, patients, visitors, community clergy, CPE students, and volunteers. Provide orientation, scheduling, and supervision for volunteers.
• Document all spiritual care visits in the electronic medical record (EMR) and other required departmental records.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree.
• Completion of at least 4 units of ACPE Clinical Pastoral Education (1 unit for hospice).

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Divinity or a related field (required for Board Certification by endorsing faith group).
• 1 year of experience as a healthcare chaplain, preferably in an acute care hospital.
• Board Certification by APC or NACC, or eligibility and active pursuit of certification.

• Ability to initiate new programs and organize existing ones.
• Proficiency in computer skills, Microsoft Office, and electronic medical records.
• Basic understanding of medical terminology and diagnoses.
• Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
