About the Role

Competently assesses, coordinates, and evaluates the spiritual needs of patients and families and provides direct spiritual care in coordination with the patient care team. Develops, documents, and delivers a spiritual care plan. Fosters and maintains collaborative relationships between patients, their family/support group, physicians, and other healthcare providers through timely and effective communications. Adheres to hospital policies, industry standards, best practices, and applicable laws/regulations to promote a quality, highly reliable patient experience. Provides worship services, memorials, and support groups for staff as requested.

Responsibilities

• Establishes and periodically revises plan of care by comprehensive and ongoing spiritual assessment of patient/family concerns, strengths, and limitations.
• Gathers and incorporates data reflective of the patient/family’s developmental stages and age-specific needs into assessment and treatment planning.
• Communicates changes in plan of care to other members of the interdisciplinary team and community resources as appropriate.
• Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of care of the patient/family and provides appropriate spiritual counseling based on the plan of care.
• Applies principles and techniques of spiritual care to increase coping effectiveness of patients/families, interdisciplinary team, and community members.
• Provides assistance in planning and/or conducting funerals, memorial services, and/or other sacramental needs.
• Educates about community resources and provides a link to these services.
• Acts as a resource to staff to assist with spiritual needs and concerns.
• Mentors and fosters a constructive teaching environment that helps Chaplain Students and new Chaplains build confidence in their skills, knowledge, and abilities.
• Prepares and completes accurate documentation related to patients in medical and departmental records as required.
• Thoroughly reviews charts and makes any necessary changes.
• Maintains strictest confidence of all patient protected health information (PHI) and protects all PHI from accidental, intentional, or inappropriate disclosure.
• Performs quality spiritual care in compliance with department standards, policies, and procedures, as well as local, state, and federal regulatory agencies to deliver the highest level of patient privacy and care.
• Retains certification and completes mandated continuing education requirements to meet facility and regulatory agencies accreditation and licensure requirements.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in Divinity or a graduate-level theological degree from a CHEA-accredited organization, or equivalent granted by the Association of Professional Chaplains.
• 4 units of ACPE training.
• 2 years of recent relevant experience.
• NCC-Board certification through APC, NACC, NAJC, or CASC within three years if hired after 01/01/2025.

Skills and Knowledge

• Knowledge of death, dying, grief, and bereavement processes.
• Knowledge of diverse religious practices and community resources.
• Interpersonal skills, both written and verbal, to explain sensitive information clearly and professionally to diverse audiences.
• Well-developed time management and organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize assignments and work within standardized operating procedures to achieve objectives and meet deadlines.
• General knowledge of computer applications, such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
• Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team, including accomplishing multiple tasks in an environment with interruptions.
• Ability to identify, evaluate, and resolve standard problems by selecting appropriate solutions from established options.
• Ensures the privacy of each patient’s protected health information (PHI).
• Builds collaborative relationships with peers and other healthcare providers to achieve departmental and corporate objectives.

Schedule

Per diem/casual, variable shift hours (day/evening/night), including weekends as needed (Saturday, Sunday).

Pay

Pay range is $46.66 to $65.32 per hour. The compensation range may vary based on the geographic location where the position is filled. Total compensation considers multiple factors, including, but not limited to, a candidate’s experience, education, skills, licensure, certifications, departmental equity, training, and organizational needs.
