Certified Welding Inspector (Fort Wayne, IN)

Responsibilities

• Interviews and performs pre-employment testing for welding operators, including testing internal candidates to American Welding Society specifications for 1G and 2G certification.
• Maintains testing records for welding operators.
• Plans and executes post-hire training and testing, covering basic math, welding symbol interpretation, defect identification, machine setup, crane use, company computerized job tracking software, and safety.
• Oversees new welding trainees in a segregated training area and determines proficiency levels to release trainees to general welding operations.
• Determines weld recipes for production welding of parts and writes welding procedures for welded products.
• Plans jobs by interpreting routers and complex blueprints to determine equipment, fixtures, materials, and supplies needed, and sequences tasks to maximize weld time.
• Fits and welds production and sample jobs to meet customer requirements.
• Finishes or repairs parts using tools such as sanders, grinders, and torches.
• Sets up jobs by retrieving equipment and materials, fitting pieces in fixtures, clamping parts, and setting voltage and amperage for material thickness.
• Hand fits parts or fabricates simple fixtures by interpreting blueprints, determining dimensions, operating fabrication machines (e.g., saws and drill presses), and assembling fixtures.
• Loads and unloads pieces in and out of fixtures manually or using an overhead crane.
• Operates MIG welding machines, and may also perform arc and TIG welding procedures.
• Performs first-piece and in-process inspections by checking dimensions and weld quality per blueprint using calipers, height gauges, protractors, and squares.
• Inspects parts according to C=0 charts and completes inspection forms.
• Performs non-destructive testing on welded parts, such as ultrasonic testing.
• Maintains and repairs welding equipment, calibrates welding machines per company requirements, and logs maintenance in the Vantage system.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or higher degree in welding engineering or welding technology, or up to 4 years of relevant experience as a substitution.
• Associate’s or higher degree in welding or a non-welding related engineering technology, engineering, or a physical science, with up to 3 years of relevant experience as a substitution.

Skills

• Language Skills: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence and present information effectively in one-on-one and small group settings.
• Math Skills: Ability to perform basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rates, ratios, and percentages.
• Reasoning Skills: Ability to apply common-sense understanding to carry out instructions provided in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to solve problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Physical Demands

• Regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear.
• Frequently required to reach with hands and arms.
• Occasionally required to stand, walk, and kneel.
• Must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities required include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
