About the Role
Construction Inspectors spend the majority of their time working on projects performing construction-related inspection requiring specific certifications and/or experience. Inspections may cross multiple disciplines or focus on a specified area of expertise, including structural steel, concrete, masonry, fireproofing, etc. Inspection involves visual/physical inspection and field testing to verify conformance with plans and specifications.
Responsibilities
- Perform daily inspection of construction projects to monitor quality and adherence to building code requirements, construction drawings, and project specifications.
- Read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
- Prepare inspection reports and provide written documentation of observations and testing of materials.
- Communicate findings to engineers or project managers and collaborate on solutions to potential issues.
- Perform testing, observation, and inspection as directed to ensure work meets contract specifications.
- Document findings and results clearly, including nonconformance reports.
- Perform basic data analysis to verify accuracy before communication and submittal to the Project Manager.
- Coordinate pre-dispatch activities with Project, Department, and/or Office Managers.
- Maintain equipment operation and calibration.
- Drive a vehicle (e.g., Ford F-150 or equivalent) and arrive at project sites in a timely manner.
- Submit clear and accurate documentation of findings and results daily.
- Communicate regularly with dispatchers, project managers, and contractors.
- Maintain assigned equipment and vehicle in clean working order.
- Follow safety rules and practices, including pre-task planning and reporting safety issues.
- Adhere to quality standards on all projects.
- May lead the activities of other engineering technicians on larger field projects.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology or Construction Engineering Technology preferred.
- Minimum 2-4 years’ experience in construction inspection.
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history.
Qualifications
- Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) / American Welding Society (AWS) certification.
- American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) Level II certification in Ultrasonic Testing (UT) (preferred).
- ICC certification in the following categories (preferred):
- Structural Steel – Bolting
- Structural Steel – Welding
- ASNT Level II certification in the following (preferred):
- Visual Testing (VT)
- Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)
- Dye Penetrant Testing (PT)
- Radiographic Testing (RT)
