About the Role

Construction Inspectors spend the majority of their time working on projects performing construction-related inspection requiring specific certifications and/or experience. Inspections may cross multiple disciplines or focus on a specified area of expertise, including structural steel, concrete, masonry, fireproofing, etc. Inspection involves visual/physical inspection and field testing to verify conformance with plans and specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Perform daily inspection of construction projects to monitor quality and adherence to building code requirements, construction drawings, and project specifications.
  • Read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
  • Prepare inspection reports and provide written documentation of observations and testing of materials.
  • Communicate findings to engineers or project managers and collaborate on solutions to potential issues.
  • Perform testing, observation, and inspection as directed to ensure work meets contract specifications.
  • Document findings and results clearly, including nonconformance reports.
  • Perform basic data analysis to verify accuracy before communication and submittal to the Project Manager.
  • Coordinate pre-dispatch activities with Project, Department, and/or Office Managers.
  • Maintain equipment operation and calibration.
  • Drive a vehicle (e.g., Ford F-150 or equivalent) and arrive at project sites in a timely manner.
  • Submit clear and accurate documentation of findings and results daily.
  • Communicate regularly with dispatchers, project managers, and contractors.
  • Maintain assigned equipment and vehicle in clean working order.
  • Follow safety rules and practices, including pre-task planning and reporting safety issues.
  • Adhere to quality standards on all projects.
  • May lead the activities of other engineering technicians on larger field projects.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology or Construction Engineering Technology preferred.
  • Minimum 2-4 years’ experience in construction inspection.
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history.

Qualifications

  • Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) / American Welding Society (AWS) certification.
  • American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) Level II certification in Ultrasonic Testing (UT) (preferred).
  • ICC certification in the following categories (preferred):
    • Structural Steel – Bolting
    • Structural Steel – Welding
  • ASNT Level II certification in the following (preferred):
    • Visual Testing (VT)
    • Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)
    • Dye Penetrant Testing (PT)
    • Radiographic Testing (RT)
