Certified Welding Inspector
About the role
Construction Inspectors spend the majority of their time working on projects performing construction related inspection requiring specific certifications and/or experience. They monitor quality and adherence to building code requirements, construction drawings and project specifications during inspections which may cross multiple inspection disciplines or within a specified area of expertise including structural steel, concrete, masonry, fireproofing, etc. They perform visual/physical inspections and field tests to verify conformance with plans and specifications.
Responsibilities
- Performs testing, observation, and inspection as directed in accordance with training and the specified procedures to determine if work is done according to contract specifications.
- Reads and interprets construction drawings and specifications.
- Provides clear documentation of findings and results.
- Prepares inspection reports and documents nonconformance.
- Performs basic analysis of data to verify accuracy before communication and submission to the Project Manager.
- Communicates information to Project Manager and other personnel as directed by the Project Manager.
- May interact with client and other site personnel to provide input on appropriate resolution of findings.
- May assist Project Manager in developing the scope for testing and inspection services.
- Collaborates with the project team on solutions to potential issues.
- Coordinates pre-dispatch activities with Project, Department, and/or Office Managers.
- Maintains equipment operation and calibration.
- May lead the activities of other engineering technicians on larger field projects.
- Drives a vehicle such as a Ford F-150 or equivalent.
- Arrives at project sites in a timely manner.
- Sets up and operates inspection equipment.
- Submits clear and accurate documentation of findings and results daily.
- Communicates with dispatcher, project manager, and contractor on a regular basis.
- Maintains assigned equipment and vehicle in clean working order.
- Follows safety rules and practices and other safety requirements for all projects. Follows the Smith System’s five keys to driving. Performs pre-task planning prior to executing work. Reports any safety issues or concerns to management.
- Maintains quality standards on all projects.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Associates degree in Civil Engineering Technology or Construction Engineering Technology preferred.
- Minimum 2-4 years’ experience in construction inspection.
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history.
- Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)/American Welding Society (AWS)
- American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) Level II certification: Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
Preferred Certification(s)
- ICC certification in the following categories: Structural Steel – Bolting, Structural Steel - Welding
- American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) Level II certification: Visual Testing (VT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), Dye Penetrant Testing (PT), Radiographic Testing (RT)

Maximum Salary: $39.50/hour Minimum Salary: $33.00/hour
