About the role
The Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) at Oceans Behavioral Hospital Baton Rouge provides assessment, individualized intervention planning, treatment planning, and group therapy to help patients manage mental health issues. Services are guided by Joint Commission, Federal, and State Regulations, and the hospital's mission.
Responsibilities
- Provides direct therapeutic recreation therapy services in accordance with accepted standards of therapeutic recreation practice.
- Plans and conducts individual and group therapy as assigned by physician's order.
- Completes necessary paperwork within 72 hours of admission, including Comprehensive Integrated Assessment and Multidisciplinary Treatment Integration.
- Participates in treatment team meetings and reports on assigned patients.
- Documents services rendered in the medical record in a timely manner.
- Communicates with patients and families in an age/disability/culturally sensitive manner, identifying safety and special needs.
- Develops and provides in-services for staff and community members.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree and CTRS license, with ongoing certification.
- Three (3) years of clinical practice in inpatient acute care, and one year of supervisory experience preferred.
- Knowledge of mental illness, chemical dependency, and family dynamics.
- In-depth knowledge of clinical therapy modalities.
- Excellent communication and group/process skills.
- Versatility, flexibility, and ability to handle stressful situations.
- Good time management and organizational skills.
- Ability to coordinate multi-faceted workload.
- Close supervision required.
- CPR certification and an Oceans-approved behavioral de-escalation program.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of principles of growth and development appropriate to patient populations.
- Ability to assess and interpret patient data to identify needs and provide appropriate care.
- Experience with diverse patient populations including adolescents, chronically mentally ill, adults, geriatrics, chemically dependent, and dually diagnosed individuals.
- Understanding of chronic mental illness.
- Basic knowledge of chronic mental illness.
- Knowledge of clinical therapy modalities.
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients and families.
- Ability to work under close supervision and in a high-paced, stressful environment.
