Job Responsibilities

• Provides direct instructional services to students under the general supervision of a certified teacher.
• Supports the teacher by helping to supervise activities in the classroom, working with students on an individual, small group or whole class basis.
• May be assigned additional responsibilities, such as teaching classes on their own, covering planned absences and allowing teachers time for meetings and conferences.
• Manages other support staff and assists with recording student grades, data and reporting on student progress.
• Coordinates instruction with the primary teachers and communicates with parents.
• Works with individual students as directed by teacher.
• Assists the teacher with marking and correcting work.
• Affords assistance with school events, trips and other activities.
• Assists in classroom behavior management.
• Aids in routine classroom functioning.
• Accompanies students when removal from a classroom is necessary or when the students must go to another part of the building.
• Aids in restraining students who may exhibit behaviors that are injurious to self or others.
• Affords assistance in managing games and free play, both indoors and outdoors.
• Aids in the implementation of activities that include but are not limited to: feeding, lifting, toileting, and other activities of daily living (e.g. grooming, hygiene, leisure/recreation, etc.).
• Lifts and transports students in conjunction with daily living activities.
• Taught non-ambulatory students are expected to lift 40-pound loads independently and may be required to lift/move students weighing more than 40 pounds with assistance from another adult and/or with the use of appropriate lifting devices.
• Maintains working knowledge and ability to implement classroom and school wide safety plans.
• Discusses parental requests for information with the teacher before responding.
• Maintains confidentiality of student information.
• Assumes teacher responsibilities in the absence of the classroom teacher or as assigned.

Job Qualifications

• Valid NYS Teaching Assistant Certification
• Level I, II, III
