About the Role
Contributes to the organization by traveling to different HEA locations to accurately collect and document exam information into the electronic medical record system for the Ophthalmologist while maintaining patient flow within the clinic. Main locations include Gramercy, Tanglewood, Sugar Land, Pearland, and Memorial City.
Responsibilities
- Correctly summarizes and documents the patient exam for the physician, including proper charting, documenting additions to the chief complaint, assessment, and treatment recommendations.
- Observes the patient and physician, assisting during exams (e.g., holding the patient’s head in the slit lamp, providing medications/instruments).
- Maintains awareness of patient communication during physician instructions and education.
- Prepares and ensures completeness/accuracy of consent forms for in-office procedures.
- Prepares referral letters as directed by the physician, via dictation or medical record summary.
- Ensures daily transmission of referral letters and pertinent reports/tests to referring physicians.
- Performs preliminary visual health assessments.
- Assists with minor procedures and prepares/cleans rooms post-procedure.
- Provides quality patient care, maintains confidentiality, and reviews data for errors.
- Assists in training other ophthalmic scribes.
- Adapts to frequent clinic changes while maintaining efficiency.
- Supports secretarial duties when not in exam rooms (e.g., phone calls, scheduling, prescription refills).
- Adheres to HEA policies, ethical principles, and state/federal regulations.
Floaters
As a floater, this position travels between HEA locations to support staffing needs. Work assignments may change with short notice. Additional duties based on operational needs.
Skills
- Excellent computer skills
- Strong verbal and written communication
- Organizational skills with attention to detail
- Proficiency in spelling
- Visual Field Testing (CVF, Amsler Grid, HVF)
- Basic Contact Lens knowledge
- Ophthalmic Coding
Qualifications
- Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent preferred
- Certifications & Licenses:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) required within 6 months of hire
- Uncertified Ophthalmic Scribes must obtain JCAHPO (OCS) certification within 1 year
