Certified School Nurse (CSN) (10-Month)
Position Summary
The Certified School Nurse (CSN) plays a vital role in promoting and protecting the health and well-being of students to support academic success. The CSN provides direct nursing services, manages chronic health conditions, responds to emergencies, and ensures compliance with state health mandates. This position also serves as a liaison between students, families, school staff, and community healthcare providers to coordinate care, maintain accurate health records, and foster a safe and healthy school environment.
Key Responsibilities
Direct Care & Health Services
- Provide direct nursing care, first aid, and emergency response for students and staff.
- Conduct health screenings, including vision, hearing, height/weight, and scoliosis assessments, in accordance with state guidelines.
- Assess student health concerns and determine appropriate action, including parent notification, medical referrals, or follow-up.
Health Management & Documentation
- Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Health Plans (IHPs) and Emergency Care Plans (ECPs) for students with medical needs.
- Maintain confidential, up-to-date health records in compliance with HIPAA and FERPA regulations.
- Track and report required immunization, communicable disease, and health compliance data.
- Administer and document prescribed medications and treatments safely and accurately.
Collaboration & Education
- Communicate regularly with families, healthcare providers, and staff regarding student health needs.
- Collaborate with teachers, counselors, and administrators to support student attendance and participation.
- Promote health education and awareness programs for students and staff.
- Participate in professional development related to school health practices and current standards of care.
Compliance & Reporting
- Serve as a mandated reporter for suspected child abuse or neglect in accordance with Pennsylvania law.
- Ensure compliance with state and district health policies and procedures.
- Maintain inventory of medical supplies and ensure appropriate storage and readiness for emergencies.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN required).
- Valid Pennsylvania Registered Nurse (RN) license.
- Pennsylvania Department of Education Certified School Nurse (CSN) certification (or willingness to obtain within designated timeframe).
- Current CPR/BLS certification.
- Current Act 34, 114, and 151 clearances.
- Strong communication, organization, and collaboration skills.
- Experience in pediatric, public health, or school nursing preferred.
