Certified RN, First Assistant - East Surgery - Full-Time

About the role

The Certified Registered Nurse First Assistant is a professional employed by Erlanger Medical Center responsible for direct and/or indirect care of the patient in the surgical setting. This employee is a specifically trained registered nurse who demonstrates the skills, knowledge, and judgment necessary to perform the first assistant role under direct and/or indirect supervision of a qualified physician in a professional manner to provide quality care to the surgical patient. The responsibilities should be in accordance with the Tennessee Nurse Practice Act.

Responsibilities

• Perform the first assistant role under direct and/or indirect supervision of a qualified physician
• Assume scrub/circulator role in surgery when appropriate
• Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span
• Assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs
• Provide the care needed as described in the unit's policies and procedures

Education

Required: Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing, currently enrolled or graduate from RNFA program.
Preferred: Bachelors in Nursing

Experience

Required: Two (2) years experience in the operating room
Preferred: Two (2) years experience as a CRNFA

Licenses & Certifications

• Current licensure to practice nursing in the State of Tennessee
• CRNFA certification within one year of entry into role
• CNOR certification
• BLS completed prior to going to the unit/department and maintained going forward
• Tennessee licensure or multistate licensure from a compact state must be obtained within three months of hire for non-Tennessee residents (The Nurse Licensure Compact will not change how to obtain or renew a Tennessee license; the Tennessee nursing license will be a single state license for Tennessee Residents or non-compact state residents)

Competency Evaluation

Evaluation of competency is done through evaluation of direct supervisor by direct observation, in a skills lab, or discussed verbally or written. Competency can also be evaluated by a formal peer review process and/or by self assessment based on objective criteria that is reviewed and validated.
